Balcony Boy Episode 4
Did he just…?
He just pushed me into the pool.
I come up to the surface and look around to see a few people looking over at me, curious. I feel the heat rise in my cheeks and begin to swim to the side. The pool just had to be empty didn’t it? I just had to trip and spill my drink. It just had to be spilt on Balcony Boy.
He obviously lied when he said it was no big deal. I see him laughing at the side of the pool as he watches me. I pull myself out of the pool, stomp over to where Jake is stood and do the most stupid, impulsive, anger fuelled thing I have ever done in my life.
I slap him. 6
I hear the satisfying smack of my hand against his face. He immediately stops smiling and stares at me in shock, mouth hung slightly open. I then do the second most stupid, impulsive, anger fuelled thing I’ve ever done in my life.
I shove him in the pool, pick up my drinks and walk back to my family, not stopping to look back. +
I get back to my family and give them their drinks. My dad looks up, “Why are you all wet?”
“Um, I fell?” It came out as more of a question than a convincing excuse.
“But managed to save all four of our drinks without spilling them?”
“Yes?” He shakes his head, clearly not believing me, but doesn’t ask any more questions.
I spend the rest of the day avoiding Jake as much as humanly possible. It’s not hard considering the amount of people at the hotel, but I’m still constantly on edge. We’re all sat at the bar when my grandad turns to me.
“Have you spoke to that lad?” he asks quietly.
I look around him to see the rest of my family are distracted in conversation. If there’s anyone I can tell about my awful encounter today, it’s my grandad. I sigh and drop my head into my hands. “Yes, actually.”
“Guessing it didn’t go well?”
“You have no idea.” I tell him everything and glare at him whenever he starts to laugh.
“Well, that was bold of you.”
I snort in response.
“Grandad, I slapped him, then pushed him into the pool.”
“As I said, bold.” He replies smirking at me. “In your defence, he pushed you in the pool first.” 1
“I spilt my drink on him first.”
He scratches the back of his neck, “Well, yes, you did do that.” He pauses. “But that was an accident.”
I smile at his feeble attempt to make me feel better.
“Although,” I cringe, not wanting to hear what comes next, “pretending to speak French? Really?”
“I know, I know. I panicked!”
“Your reaction to panic is quite different to other people’s.” He smiles mockingly and I smack his shoulder lightly. “Don’t worry about it too much.” But even as he says it, I think we both know it’ll be on my mind for the rest of the holiday.
After a night of playing cards, we all go to bed. I toss and turn, today’s events replaying in my head over and over again.

Balcony Boy Episode 5
I wake up the next morning to sun shining through the curtains and the smell of bacon. I walk through to the living room/kitchen area to see my mum and dad cooking in the tiny space. My mum is the first one to notice me, “Morning love, how did you sleep?” +
“Could’ve been better.”
“Well, nothing a bacon butty can’t fix.” I smile as she slides the plate over to me along with a glass of orange juice. I take one bite and groan. No matter what country we’re in, my dad can make a decent bacon sandwich.
I finish it quickly and dust the crumbs off my hands. “Do you want another one?” My dad asks me, turning from the stove.
“Is that even a question?” I ask and he laughs, adding another sandwich to my plate. I pick up my plate, deciding to eat it on the balcony. I leave the plate on the table, taking the sandwich and walking over to the railing to eat it. Even though it’s still quite early, plenty of people are already at the pool; I don’t fail to notice that Jake isn’t there. I sigh, longing for the water.
I stay on the balcony for a while, looking at the view. My eyes flick to Jake’s balcony and my heart stops. Jake is stood there, casually leant on the railing, eyes already glued on me. I immediately turn and walk back into the room, desperate to get out of his burning gaze. 1
After breakfast we all go down to the pool. Once again I begin the day with a few lengths of the pool. Everything is going great, until someone decides to stand in my path. I come up from under water to be face to face with Jake.
Why, God? Why me?
He smiles at me as I pull my goggles on top of my head. I’m breathing heavily because of my swimming and try to control it? “Do you like swimming?” He asks me, smirking.
“J’adore la natation.” What am I doing?!
“I’ll take that as a yes.” I nod and try to walk around him, he’s a couple inches taller than me, but I’m not short at 5 feet 8 inches. He must be about 6 foot. He grabs my arm as I walk past. “Je suis désolé.” He says, I shake my head and roll my eyes, trying to walk away again, but he doesn’t loosen his hold on my arm. Before I have time to realise what he’s doing, he’s pulled his arm back and splashed me with water. I stand shocked until I come to my senses and splash him back.
Soon, we’re having a full-on splash war. When I get close enough, I grab the top of his head and dunk him under the water. I hold him under for a few seconds before letting go. He comes back up and grabs my waist, tickling me. I scream (is it possible to scream in French?) and try to get out of his grasp. He holds my waist, lifts me up, and throws me into the water a few feet away.
I’m laughing when I come back up to the surface, and so is Jake. He goes under water and I try to get away, but he grabs my ankle and drags me backwards whilst I try to stay above water. I give up and instead use my other leg to kick him in the chest, not hard enough to hurt too badly, but just enough for him to let go. He does and stands still, smiling at me. I smile back before shaking my head and turning to go.
“Wait!” I turn back to him, questioningly. “I really am sorry.” He says sincerely. I nod, before getting out of the pool.
When I walk back to my family, my mum looks up and smiles. “Drinks?”
I sigh, “Same as yesterday?”
“Yep, thanks love.”
I groan and walk towards the bar. I order the drinks as usual and hand over the money.
“Need help carrying them back?” Jake appears next to me seemingly out of nowhere. My God, he’s everywhere today. I really don’t want him to help, but I could really do with help carrying them back. I reluctantly nod and he takes three drinks off the top of the bar, leaving me with two. He stops to let me walk beside him, “Lead the way.”
I roll my eyes and walk in the direction of my family’s sunbeds. My mum looks up and her eyes settle on Jake behind me. “Thanks love, who’s this?”

Balcony Boy Episode 6
A flicker of confusion passes Jake’s face, but he soon covers it with a polite smile. “Jake Fletcher, ma’am.” He moves all three drinks to one hand so he can shake my mums.
“Lovely to meet you, Jake. Are you one of Amber’s friends?”
I cringe, “Something like that.” He responds. +
I pass the drinks out, keeping hold of my own blue slush. “Hey Amber, can I talk to you a sec.” Jake says. I nod and follow him. He walks around the pool and stops on the other side, me close behind him.
“Funny how your mum can speak perfect, fluent English, whilst you struggle to form a sentence isn’t it?”
I cringe and hang my head, “Sorry.”
He nods, “Well, guess I’ll have to do this again.” He shoves me into the pool.
But this time, I see it coming. I grab one of his wrists and pull him in with me.
We both go into the pool at the same time.
“You really need to stop doing that.” I say punching his shoulder.
“It’s so weird hearing you speak English.”
“Well, don’t get used to it.”
“Oh yeah, why’s that?”
“Because you’re going to leave me alone.”
“Wouldn’t be so sure about that.”
I sigh in frustration and leave the pool. Stupid boys with their perfect smiles, and their great bodies.
I hear him jogging up behind me. “So, is your name actually Amber?”
“Are you my age? 17?”
“You like swimming right?”
“You’re on the top floor, same as me?”
“You like blue slushes?”
“What’s your favourite colour?” I stop abruptly, making Jake nearly walk into me, and turn around to face him, not accounting for how close that would make us. I swallow, and try to ignore the fact I could feel his breath on my face.
“What are you doing?”
“Trying to get to know you.”
He shrugs, “Because I want to.”
“Well, we don’t always get what we want.”
“I’m quite good at getting what I want.”
“Do you realise how much of a p---k that sentence made you sound.”
“You’re right, it sounded better in my head, but that’s beside the point.” 1
“What is the point?”
“That I want to get to know you.”
“I figured. I just don’t get why.”
His smirk fades and he looks out over the hotel. “This holiday might not be as mind-numbingly boring if I have someone to hang out with.”
“Look around,” I gesture around us, “there are plenty of other people you can hang out with.”
“You kind of chose yourself as soon as you spilt your drink on me.”
“My God, it was an accident.”
“Then I guess fate chose you.” He holds his hands up. “Nothing to do with me.”
I roll my eyes, turn back around and begin to walk back to my family.
I’m about to sit on my sunbed when an arm comes around my shoulder.
My mum looks up and smiles at me, and who I presume is Jake stood behind me.
“Bloom.” My mum fills in.
“Mrs Bloom! Lovely to see you again, do you mind if I steal Amber from you for a while.”
My mum’s smile brightens; clearly delighted I’ve made a ‘friend’ and obviously choosing to ignore my scowl. “Of course! No problem.” My mum winks at me and I look over to see my nana and grandad beaming. I flush bright red, happy my dad has chosen to stay quiet, I don’t know how much more embarrassment I can take.
“Thanks Mrs Bloom!” Jake steers us both away from them and waves at my mum.
“What the hell was that?” I say as soon as we’re out of earshot, shoving his arm from my shoulders.
“It was me getting what I wanted using my incredible charm and irresistible good looks.”
I scoff and follow him as he leads me to the arcade.
