A section of Chinese parents is preparing for the kids expensive hats so that their heads become more round, as affected by the traditional notion of the more round, the more beautiful. They even force it on kids at 3 months old.

A young mother shared her story on an online community called Xiaohongshu, about her journey of fixing her kid’s skull despite her family’s objection. The post soon gained great social attention.

She wrote that because her daughter had a habit of sleeping with her face up, her head seems to be flattened towards its sides. She tried her utmost to teach her daughter to sleep on the sides to no avail.

When her daughter was 7 months old, she decided to bring her to a local clinic and appointed a customized head adjusting gadget for the kid.

The medical staff there, then, wrapped the baby’s head with layers of gypsum to measure and mold it. The 7-month-old baby had to live with the gypsum mold for a long time to “form” the shape of her head to be as round as what her mother would like it to be.

Tencent News reported a trend of head-adjusting hats is gaining traction since October this year with a lot of parents searching malls for this gadget for their kids.

These molds are made bowling ball-like for heads that are flattened on the back. The molds are fixed on the heads of the kids for hours with a belief that this helps adjust the still susceptible skulls, making them “more beautiful”.

The round-head trend has just picked up momentum in China. Decades ago, the Chinese favored flattened backhead and wide forehead because they believed it means luck for the kids’ life. Many Chinese parents then asked their kids to sleep on books or docks of wood to flatten the backs of their heads.

In medical sense, experts recommend the early development period of kids should be natural.
