    ✍️ Chapter Twelve✍️
After a while of watching sports, I became bored and announced my leave to the bedroom. I was slightly tired and when they both ignored me, I simply trudged over to my bedroom. I knew Kyle was sleeping over tonight, he will have the spare bedroom right across from mine. There was absolutely no way my parents were going to let him go back there tonight. Not if things were as tense as we imagined them to be. I was still quite curious of what had happened. I had hoped to talk to him about it. I guess he wouldn’t until he was finally ready to talk to me.

In my bedroom, I took my laptop and continued where I left off with my project. It was due Monday and I was simply polishing off the some details. I was at this for whole hour and a half before I heard talking voices in the hallway. My parents and Kyle were calling it a night too. The shut of the door opposite from me indicated that Kyle was already given that spare room.

I decided to call it a night too as I switched off my equipment and turned my lamp off. I tied my frizzy hair into a messy bun on top of my head. I put on my long t-shirt and that was the only thing I had on—including my panties— as I went under the covers.

I tried to sleep. I couldn’t. My mind was wondering about Kyle. I knew he wouldn’t sleep tonight. It will be haunting him. I shifted in my bed contemplating whether to go and check up on him. However, that action was deemed unacceptable by conventions. But Kyle needed me, he needed someone to hold him while he vented out his emotions.

I sat up in my bed and pulled my duvet away. I got out of the bed, moving towards my door. It was there that I stopped, contemplating, deciding what to do.

Just as I was about to open my door, a small quiet knock rapped against it. It was followed by Kyle’s small voice.

“Keya?” He whispered. “Are you sleeping?”

As quickly as he spoke I wrenched the door open, and saw him standing before me in the dark.

I let him inside and just as I closed the door, Kyle pulled me into a constricting hug and buried his head in the crook of my neck. Surprised by this, I simply hugged him back, wrapping my arms around his neck and shoulders. We stayed this way for a while.

The fact he kept on on crushing me as hugged me meant that my breathing was restricted. It was after a while that he realised I was struggling.

I laughed it off, “C’mon lets go to bed.”

My comment resulted in the suggestive look from him.

“Jeez! Not like that!” I shook my head, punching him for his dirty mind. He smiled and it was that small smile that gave me hope that he will be fine.

We moved towards the bed where we both sat cross legged. The t-shirt I was wearing got pulled up slightly but with awkward adjustments I managed to hide my thighs. I looked up at him at the same time he looked away from my legs. I flushed from his look. I closed my eyes for a few seconds to rid all illicit thoughts so that I can focus on the important issue in this matter.

“What did he do?” I asked him. I took both of his hands in a sincere gesture as possible. Those hands swallowed my own and I thought it ironic how big and manly his hands were, but at the same time they were so fragile and vulnerable.

Kyle was staring hauntingly at our joint hands as well and I could tell that he was going over what had happened before I picked him up.

He looked up at my eyes, searching them and lacing them with his intense bright green emeralds.

“What did he do?” I asked him again.

He looked away from my own searching eyes and stared back at our joint hands.

He shrugged, “The usual.” He answered me.

I coaxed him to continue and so he did.

“He got drunk, got knows where. He came home to find me watching TV and for a while he sat quietly and watched. Then moments later he was up at my face, took me by the collar and started screaming drunken curses at me.” I knew telling me this was hard for him. His body was beginning to shake and he was clenching and unclenching his jaw at every sentence he took.

“What did he say, Kyle?” I squeezed the hands that were holding mines.

He looked up at me and those glazing green orbs pierced my own in the most intense gaze. My lungs at that moment decided to stop functioning.

“He blamed me, Key,” His voice broke for a moment and I waited until he regained his composure to explain.

“He blamed me. He said it was my fault that mom and Jase left, he said that I drove them away, he…he said it was because I was a uselessly coward bàstard…” I watched him press his head unto our joint hands, his shaking form made me shake too.

I knew Kyle didn’t cry. For the past eight years I’ve known him, he’s never shed tears. He never cried when his mother decided to leave them when he was only but nine. He never cried when his father took into drinking after her departure. He never cried when his father’s drunkenness led him to be violent towards his children, especially towards his older brother of six years, Jason, who long left eight years ago because of the same issue. Kyle didn’t cry when his father then turned his drunken violence towards him after his brother’s departure.

No, Kyle never cried. However, I knew inside he was tearing apart. Inside he bottled up his emotions so that he would let them affect his exterior. It was only rarely that he broke down and showed me his vulnerable self. And it was times like this that my heart went for him because he’s suffered more than his fair share of pain in his life.

It was issues with his father that lead him to change his appearance in the first place. Long gone was that sweet nerdish boy with braces when I met him. Now he was replaced by this fierce, bad boyish looking man.

“You don’t seriously believe him do you?” I asked trying to find the root of his problem.

He looked up at me with his haunted expression and his silence was enough answer for me to know that he did.

“Kyle!” I shook him to his senses. “He’s wrong. It’s not your fault, he’s just trying to find someone to blame for his own selfish misdemeanors!”

Kyle was glowering at our hands and at the same time he was stroking my knuckles, leaving a burning sensation which I tried not let it affect me.

“What if he’s right? What if they left because of me, because of my uselessness in this life. What’s the point Key? They never cared enough for me to stay, they left me with him, not caring what happened to me.” He was blinking at me, the depth of his emotion searing at my own pain receptors.

“Aw, Ky.” I shifted on the bed until I hugged him. It was awkward because he was taller and bigger than me, so in the end we ended up lying face to face on the bed. I stroked his hair because I couldn’t help it.

“I don’t believe that’s true. We don’t really know the reason why they left but I strongly suspect its because of that narcissistic áss, not you, Ky.” I whispered to him.

His eyes were closed tightly and this told me that he was trying his best to rid the demons that told him otherwise, he was trying his best to believe my words. He stayed this way for long while and I was trying my best to think of something that will distract him from his current predicament.

I remembered the party and meeting Ryland’s friends and thought this might be good enough change of subject, a safer subject from this one.

“Guess who I met today,” I moved my hand from his hair, took his fisted hand and entangled it with my own.

His eyes slowly opened and at this close proximity, I studied the green ocean pool that drowned me instantly.

“Who?” His voice was hoarse, huskier.

    “James, Ryland’s friend.”

He frowned for a moment. “James as in James Bradley?”

I smile, “I didn’t learn his surname but I guess so. He said you saved his life.”

For a split second, I watched the change in Kyle’s expression as he let out a small chuckle. It made me grin too because it was refreshing to see it after the earlier haunted look he wore.

“He always exaggerates that day. It wasn’t like he was dying or anything.” He told me, a ghost of a grin appearing in his face.

“Well, he seems so grateful.” I shrugged. Then I sighed as I remembered just how Kyle saved James.
“You know one of these days, your uncanny ability to fight is going to get you into more trouble.”

This time he grinned, “Worried?” He asked.

“Of course I am. I mean, people are always talking about how they shouldn’t mess with you. Sometimes it makes me want to see this side of you but then again I tell myself that I really don’t.” I closed my eyes and I could feel Kyle’s searing gaze.

“I hope you never do.” He whispered, his tone serious and my eyes instantly shot open. Our gazes locked for a brief moment without either of us saying anything. I couldn’t look at him for long before my eyes dropped to stare at his neck. I was feeling odd; my chest seemed ready to burst out my vital organ which couldn’t stop its incessant beating.

Kyle’s response was only to shift me closer towards his body and I found my face buried in his neck and his chin pressed on top of my head as we cuddled.

“Thank you, Key.” He said suddenly.

    I snorted, misunderstanding, “For what?”

    “Just—thank you.”

I understood he was thanking me for being there for him, especially every time when his father decided to fruck things up for him.

We stayed this way for a while until I broke the silence yet again.

“So are you going tomorrow?” I asked him.

“Maybe.” He replied. Another silent moment was followed.

“I want you to come…it’s going to be fun…It might get your mind off things, for a while.” I suggested.

He didn’t reply, just made a grunting noise in his throat.

“By the way, you’re not going to that party to do what I think you’re planning to do?”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

He waited for me to finally realise where he was headed with his statement. I blushed realising what he meant and I remained silence just as did. I let him fret on my silence.

“Key,” He shook me. “Are you seriously planning to lose you’re virginity tomorrow.”

    “Of course not!” I lied.

    He caught my lie.
“Okay, I’m going tomorrow.” He said after five minutes of silence.

I tried to remain ignorant at why he suddenly changed his mind about the party tomorrow. Instead I closed my eyes because really to fret over this issue was tiring. I was too comfortable tucked under him this way. I turned to the other side, so my back was against his front. He pulled me close so that we were practically spooning. His pressed his face in my neck and his soft breathing lulled me to peaceful sleep.

I don’t how long we stayed this way. However, it was before I was at the brink of unconsciousness, when I felt him shifting uncomfortably. The bodily warmth that had been projecting from him was wiped away when he sat up.

In a small mutter he said something I knew was for his ears only because he said, “D--n, even in your sleep you turn me on!”

    Chapter Thirteen✍️

The morning that followed was better than yesterday. Kyle was back to his normal self. It was as if yesterday didn’t happen at all.

I had made breakfast and Kyle and Teddy ate every single last bit of it commenting at my chef skills. The conversation was normal until my mother brought up last night.

“I heard movement last night.” She said, biting her bacon. Her eyes staring straight at me as if she knew exactly what happened.

I tried not to blush as I swallowed what I was eating, but my ears were already burning. Kyle on the other hand stared fixated at his plate, remaining ignorant. I cleared my throat in order to make a plausible excuse.

“I needed to use the hallway bathroom so—” I stopped abruptly because my words were being echoed by Kyle’s own sentence as he mentioned that he’d gone to use the bathroom in the middle of the night too.

We stared at each other and my parents had mirrored confused faces.

“So you both went to use the same bathroom?” My mother asked.

“Uh…” Kyle scratched the back of his neck.

“No, I went to use the bathroom. I don’t know what Kyle was doing?” I stared him, trying to convey some warning. He just frowned at me.

“Right…whatever.” Kelly rolled her eyes, obviously not believing me but choosing to ignore the issue anyway.

The conversation changed right then and there. We finished our breakfast and whilst my parents got ready to go shopping for the backyard garden since it was the beginning of spring and they were planning to trim and plant the garden to perfection, Kyle and I went in my room to do the usual.

“So, are you going back…?” I trailed my question but he knew what I was referring to.

Kyle shrugged. “My clothes are in his house, I have to.” He explained, his tone was haunted.

“Do you want me to come?” I asked. “I mean, I don’t know when Sav wants me to come over to her house but right now I can get the things I need for tonight…I have time.”

He stared at me for a while. “You know you don’t have to.”

“Ky, you can’t go back there alone.” I protested.

“He might not be home,” He shrugged.

I looked at him long and meaningfully.

“Fine, fine.” Kyle held both of his hands up in defeat.

I changed my expression to one containing a satisfied grin.

“Good… I’m gonna take a shower.” I told him as I went over to get my toiletries and a change of clothes since there was no way I was walking out of that shower naked. Even if I had a towel to cover my modesty, I didn’t want what happened last time to repeat itself.

After taking a shower without any embarrassing incidences occurring, Kyle and I left my house and drove my car back to his house.

It took precisely twenty minutes and when we got there we found out that he was right when he’d said that son of an áss would not be home.

We took advantage of his absence and hung around. It wasn’t as depressing as I anticipated since his presence wasn’t there to make it depressing. I spent the next hour or so helping Kyle clean the house from all the bottles of alcohol. I scrubbed the bathroom, kitchen and he swept the living area. We managed to make the house look presentable.

For the next hours we did the usual. We watched movies, played on his Xbox—with me losing each time—and laughed each time I tried to crack a joke. It was safe to say that being comedian wasn’t my calling.

I decided to play a prank on Kyle’s father when I went over to use the bathroom. I emptied all of his toothpaste by flushing it down the drain and replaced it with his shaving cream. It wasn’t that of a great prank but it sure made me smile indulgently just thinking of the outcome. The man deserved what was coming.

When I got back to Kyle’s room I told him what I did and he just shrugged and stared at me as if I was crazy but we didn’t discuss it more.

“What time are you coming to the party?” I asked him.

He shrugged. “Late…what time does it start?”
I shrugged too, “I never got the specifics, but I’m sure Sav would want to be there before everyone.”

“Why?” He frowned and I remembered that he hasn’t witnessed how Sav has been acting towards Ryland.

“Ryland.” I said his name as a way of an explanation.

“She really is into that guy?” He was leaning back at his pillow, looking at me with shrewd eyes. I was currently sitting crossed legged at the edge of his bed.

“Pretty much.” I rolled my eyes. “Are you going over at Ned’s?”

“Yeah. He won’t want to miss this party.” He smiled that snide smirk that had me staring at him for more than necessary.

When I blinked again, Kyle was frowning as if having an afterthought to what he had said.

    “What?” I asked.

His frown deepened but it wasn’t directed at me.

“Ky, what is it?” I shook him.

He blinked as if he coming back from his reverie. “No, I was just thinking.”

He stared long and meaningfully at me for a moment, his eyes trapping my own into an abyss of green. It was mere minutes before he broke the gaze, smiled at me and shook his head.

It was after that when my phone buzzed in my jeans and the caller ID belonged to Sav.
“Yeah.” I answered after the second ring.

“Where are you? I’m knocking your house door and no one is answering.” She bellowed. She was annoyed.

“Oh…I’m at Kyle’s. Sorry I forgot to text you.”

“The party starts in two hours, Keya and Ryly wants me to be there an hour earlier. That means we have one hour to get ready. One hour.” She was fuming.

    I rolled my eyes.

“Just come over to Kyle’s.” I told her.

“Nuh-uh. Haven’t you heard what I just said? We have an hour to get ready. I don’t have the time to drive over Kyle’s to get you and drive back home. You have to come over to me.” She ranted.

    “Sav…” I pleaded.

She groaned on the other end. “No, Key.”

“I swear if you make me late it’s your entire fault.”

“Just come. You won’t be late; it’s a freaking party no one needs to be early.”

She only murmured a curse before she hanged up on me.

Kyle was staring at me bemusedly. His arms folded across his chest, revealing those biceps that I was starting to love.

“Apparently, Ryly wants her there an hour early.” I rolled my eyes.

He chuckled at the way I pronounced the nickname Sav gave Ryland.

    “Having your way as always.”

“Me? Having my way?” I squelched in disbelief. “Never! Sav is the one always coercing me into things.”

“Yeah but, when you want, you can be quite convincing sometimes. Trust me when I say that I’m talking from experience.” He smirked.

I narrowed my eyes at him, grabbing the next object that was in my view and threw it at him. It was his dirty socks and he caught them before they struck him.

“What did I tell you? You’re attempts are feeble.” He laughed.

“Whatever, I’m hungry. I’m gonna go and see what you have that’s salvageable in this house.” I dashed out of his bed quickly, running downstairs to the kitchen.

Just as I was making some sandwich, I smelt him before I could feel him behind me. My whole back tensed up in anticipation as he reached out to grab a fruit from the basket. His body enveloped my whole body in the process.

I tried restarting my breathing again as soon as he backed away and after a few deep breaths, I faced him as I held out a plate of sandwiches.

We ate in what I would say was the most silent we’ve ever been and though I tried to ignore Kyle’s penetrating gaze, I couldn’t. However, I didn’t suffer this ordeal for long because Sav began honking her car outside indicating her arrival.

“You better go now before the neighbours start complaining,” Kyle said, breaking the silence.
I nodded as I retrieved my bag.

Get it together. Keya, this is Kyle your best friend. Stop looking at him like he’s someone to fantasise over!

“I’m gonna leave my car here,” I told him. “I’ll come back for it tomorrow.” The only reasons I made this excuse was so that I could check up on him tomorrow.

    He shrugged. “Fine.”

    “Laters, then.”

“Okay.” He smiled but I knew that smile was forced.

As I walked out of his house toward Sav’s purring car, I was confused by his last expression because I didn’t understand it. I wasn’t sure if it was because he didn’t want me to leave or if yesterday’s events still saddened him. But I knew it was the latter.

I just hoped that wherever that alcoholic bàstard was, he wouldn’t come back to ruin Kyle’s mood.

“What took you so long?” Sav complained as soon as I was in the confines of her car.

“You need to chill. We won’t be late.” I told her as I buckled my seatbelt when she began cruising away.

“We will be if I’m to do all your hair and makeup.” She silently fumed. But I knew I was safe from her annoyance. If I got her to come to Kyle’s I was sure I would be safe from whatever spill she would have later.

We got to Sav’s house quicker than expected, but that was because she drove like barrelling train. The instant we were inside her house, she dragged me up to her room giving me less time to greet her mother and little sister, whom were busy in the living performing some ballerina dance moves.

“I hope you showered.” She commented when she sat me down next to her mirror where all her glamourising equipment was ready to be used.

“I did. Seriously Sav, I get that you like this guy and that you want to impress him and all. But, being late is not that big of a deal! It’s a freaking party for crying out loud!” I complained when she began manhandling my face as if she was examining her canvas. Although artists didn’t even treat their artwork like this.

She was murmuring cusses beneath her breath again, but, I knew she was far gone. Her mind at the moment was concentrating on getting my face, hair and nails all done into perfection.

I let her do as she wished, I don’t know for how long. However, it was surprising when she even took little time to finish with me, because the end result was staggering.

My face was so artistically constructed, I didn’t even recognise myself in the mirror. Though, she didn’t plaster my face with too much make-up. However, what she used only enhanced my features. My hair for starters; gone was that curly perm that always inhabited in my head. Instead, my hair was straight for once. I repeat, flat-line straight. My brown hair has always been highlighted with dirty blondish colour, however, this time the colours merged together to give a chestnut brown colour. My hair was perfectly placed in my shoulders with a side fringe.

Let’s not even get started on my face. My eyes; boy, were the colour of my eyes so vivid. I think it was the eye shadow she used, because my eyes looked more silver than greenish grey. The mascara along with the eye-liner accentuated my lashes to give this whole catlike look. I had no foundation on my face nor any blusher or bronzer, however, my lips were coloured with darkish red lipstick to go with the colour of the dress I would be wearing.

I had to hand it to Sav, she was a master when it came to make-up. She only gave me a minute to examine myself before she got me up and away to dress myself. My patience towards her impatient attitude was slowing waning, but, I told myself to not lose it. After all, it was just a party.

So going over to change into the red short dress I planned on wearing, Sav became busy fixing herself in the mirror. Once I had finished shimmying into the dress, it had taken her that much time to finish with her face before she got to her hair. But, I did take my sweet time to dress.

She was done when I finished putting on my heels and next thing she did was to put on her outfit.

“Did you shave?” She asked suddenly.

“What?” I exclaimed at her inquiry.

She shimmyed into her own mini dress. Her dress material and make was different from mine in that the dress was white and it showed a little skin not just in her legs and arms but in the curve of her hips. She looked hot, as usual. But I could tell she really went out of her way this time.

“You know what I’m talking about. Since you’re planning to swipe your v-card tonight, you must have at least taken precautions. Guys nowadays like it Brazilian!” She was serious. It was that dead pan look on her face that had me staring at her with my eyes bulging out and my mouth agape in utter shock and disbelief.

    “What?” She asked.

    “Are you joking or?”

“I am being serious here, Key.” She frowned. “Do you have a condom?”

    “Oh God!”

“I’m guessing you don’t. Did you even think of getting one?” She was frantically searching her bag as she said this.

I think my mascara was going to blind my eyes by the amount of times I was blinking rapidly at her. I was still in the state of shock from her Brazilian comment.

“Here.” She took out two silver foil packets out and t----t them to me.

When I didn’t move a muscle, she dashed toward me to place them in the smaller bag that I was carrying since I was leaving the big bag that contained the rest of my clothes and toiletries.

“Seriously?” I repeated my stunned phrase.

“Hey, safety comes first, Key. You of all people should know that!” She defended herself.

She rolled her eyes, ignored me as she went over to the mirror to check herself for one final time before checking the time.

“Shit! It’s been two freaking hours already. The party has already started. D--n, Keya, you were meant to tell me the time!” She blamed me as she began dragging me downstairs.
“I am not you’re time keeper!”

“Doesn’t matter, you should have at least told me.” We said our goodbyes-well, I said my goodbyes-to her mother and Lily before we ran like monkeys in heels to her car.

She began the ignition as soon as we were inside and we were off instantly.

“For frúck sake, Sav, I don’t want to die yet. Slow down!” I complained when she hit the gas going over the required speed limit.

“You don’t understand. He wanted me there an hour earlier.” She muttered mostly to herself than me.

“I’m sure he doesn’t care. Seriously, Sav, no one is ever early in parties. I’m sure people are just starting to leave their houses.”
She shrugged as she swerved off a car getting angry honks from the driver who was now behind us.

    ✍️ Chapter Fourteen✍️

Five minutes later, we found ourselves at Ryland’s house party, just like that.

Already there were people getting out of their cars and some walking into the apartment. By the blustering music that could already be heard from this distance indicated that the party had long started. I guess I was wrong; some people did come earlier in parties.

We were only forty-five minutes late and Sav was trudging up those stairs like she was running away from a serial killer. I lost her sight of her the instant we were inside the apartment.

What a great friend! I thought to myself sarcastically as I tried trudging through a throng of people that were accompanying the hallway.

When I made it to the living, already it felt like a jungle full of animals. The lights had dimmed but they were still glowing in that party atmospheric mood. The lights were the only decorations present.

When I had been in this living area it had seemed fairly big, but, compared to the people occupying it now, it seemed a lot smaller and crowded.

Most people were in the middle of the room where I think a dance floor was made. The dance moves that were being spewed seemed more like people groping one another in some sort of dirty dancing ambiance even when the music playing was far from being slow.

A group of guys and gals were occupying the sofas and though the party may have begun thirty minutes ago, it didn’t stop them from eating each other’s mouths.

Another group were by Ryland’s computer system and though I couldn’t see neither Ryland nor Sav, I was sure they were there because I knew Ryland wouldn’t want anyone touching his stuff.

There was another group assembled in the far corner where some food and drinks were arranged in organised lines. It seamed like some sort of game was being played there and from how much everyone was already consuming, I understood that the organised line would soon be deranged.

It was getting crowded and more people were still coming by the door. The music was too loud and I wanted a drink of something. I tried reaching for that table that contained the drinks but I was stopped in my track when someone dragged me to the dance floor for some dance.

The person was holding me from behind in some sort of spooning dance.

“Enjoying yourself?” I recognised that voice.

“James!” I turned around to face him. I had forgotten his height as I craned my neck to catch a glimpse of him.

I grinned when I saw him smirking down at me. He had scrubbed up pretty well; he was wearing dark skinny jeans with a white t-shirt and a dark blazer.

“You look—” We both shouted from the music at the same time. I laughed and he grinned.

“You first!” I gave him a head go.

“I was just going to say that you look hot! I see you tamed those curls!” He said, taking a lock of my hair in his fingers.

I felt a tug of something beneath my stomach. It was then that I remembered I was attracted to him, and I think my attraction was slowly developing into a crush.

“Thank you!” I grinned and he twirled me around with the music.

I was giggling like there was no tomorrow.

“Your turn!” He pulled me close so that I could hear what he was saying.

It was in this proximity that his scent wafted in my nostrils. He was wearing some sort of cologne and as I breathed in the smell, I felt intoxicated.

“I was gonna say you look great too! I like your blazer!”

He smirked and I couldn’t stop grinning my teeth off. The boy was doing wonders to my body, and I didn’t know if it was the heat of the room or the heat of his body combined with how he was touching me.

“I know I kook great tonight! You don’t have to remind me.”

I giggled and playfully smacked him for his vanity. I don’t know what was wrong with me. It wasn’t like I was drunk. I hadn’t even drunk anything yet.

“James, baby!” A girl suddenly bumped into us, forcibly falling unto James’s arms.

Like a good gentlemen, he straightened her up and blocked her attempts to throw herself at him. He stared at me apologetically and the girl turned herself around and began grinding herself on him.

And did I feel jealous throughout this ordeal? I was surprised to find that I didn’t. In fact, it seemed quite funny to me and I kind of felt sorry for the poor girl.

“Danielle,” James said softly as he pulled her gently away.

“Baby, I miss you!” She purred locking her hands around his neck.

It was obvious that they knew each other, whether it had been a fling or a one night stand, I didn’t care. But I was annoyed at her intruding. I had been enjoying the dance I was having with him.

While he was whispering something to ear, I took that moment to discreetly flee from them in search for something to drink. Anything would have suited fine at that moment because of how thirsty I was.

I made my way to the kitchen, squeezing through people who seemed intent to remain inseparable in their locked lip embrace. Once I was there, I found the drinks.

Hallelujah! But as I looked for something less alcoholic I found there was nothing of that sort. So my next choice was red wine. I poured a cup and drained it instantly to ease my thirst. The bitterness of the after taste lingered in my throat, but I ignored it as I poured another one and decided sips will do fine for now.

I wasn’t alone in the kitchen. There was a couple by the counter interlocked in a heated embrace; their sloppy kissing noises were loud enough to be heard from the turbulent of music blaring from the living area.

On the floor, next to the cupboard was a boy gulping his beer and snacking on crackers at the same time. I ignored these fellow inhabitants as I sipped on my wine and thought.

What was my agenda for tonight?

One, to get drunk. Two, have sex. Three, have fun doing it.

I hadn’t known that I had chosen who I wanted to swipe my v-card with tonight, but when James’s face popped up as I thought of my agenda. I knew I already decided.

“There you are!” It was James’s voice that spoke from the doorway.

I turned around to face him with my faultless grin.

“Manage to get away?” I asked.

“I should be asking you that? Why did you run?” He moved closer towards me and because I was next to the beers, he reached out for one.

    “You seemed preoccupied,” I smirked.

“I’m sorry about that. She’s just a girl that I…uh—” He flickered with his hand.

“Slept with?” I finished his sentence.

He stared heatedly down towards me as he sipped on his beer.

“You don’t have to explain, I know the drill. Besides it’s not like we are…” I trailed, stopping myself before I said something stupid. I laughed trying to hide my embarrassment.

“It’s not like we are what?” He asked, his tone laced with amusement. I looked up at his hazel eyes. But instead of searing me like Kyle’s often did they only made me feel warm inside.

“It’s not like we are…dating.” I was compelled to finish my sentence and once the words were out, there was no taking them back. Something in his eyes flickered and something strange happened, I don’t know if it was the wine finally affecting my blood, but I began moving closer to him as if there was pull drawing me to him.

“Right-Right!” He said his famous phrase. He sipped on his beer, his eyes still staring down at me.

Our bodies were brushing each other as we stood there sipping our drinks whilst we locked gazes and it was at that moment that I was about to lean forward to kiss him, when I felt a hand that didn’t belong to James grab my shoulder.

I flinched, turning around quickly and I was met with scowling features that were emanating from Kyle’s face.

“Hey!” He shouted over the music. His eyes were flickering between me and James and for a moment there was a thick tension lying between the air. I don’t know what it was, however, it seems like it didn’t affect James because he broke the silence.

“Dude!” He went over and gave Kyle one of those handshake hugs which Kyle accepted.

    “Hey, James.” Kyle greeted him.

“Man, I haven’t seen you in ages! How have you been?” James was grinning at Kyle and as I watched the exchange between them, I saw that James really admired Kyle.

“Ah, y’know been here and there, busy with school! How is it with you?” Kyle asked.

It was then that they got into an animated conversation that I couldn’t make out throughout the raucous music. The fact that they seemed to have forgotten that I was next to them too was becoming increasingly annoying.

I cleared my throat loudly enough for them to hear me.

“Do you want a drink?” James was moving towards were the drinks were.

“It’s cool man, I’ll get it myself.” Kyle said as he went over to grab a beer.

It was at that small exchange that they finally realised my presence.

Kyle was staring at me in the way he had that day I tried on this dress.

I blushed instantly because for some reason, even though James did comment that I looked great tonight, it was only Kyle that managed to make me blush just by that one look.

“You made it.” I said to him, changing my train of thought very quickly. He looked good tonight, wearing dark jeans ripped at the knee, with a khaki coloured t-shirt and a black bomber jacket to match his jeans.

“Just got here with Ned…” He gestured to the doorway, looking back. “Guess he’s already made himself at home.” He shrugged.

I nodded awkwardly. I looked over at James and I realised he was staring at us with a huge grin. I grinned back at him because it was infectious. My gaze went back to Kyle’s though.

“Your hair is different.” He said, frowning at it for a moment.

I became self-conscious as I moved my hand to place back a nonexistent lock of stray hair behind my ear. I drank my wine to hide this self consciousness. I had no idea what was wrong with me at the moment.

Why was I acting weird? I had no explanation for it.

Maybe it was because Kyle had almost caught me about to lock lips with James.

“Sav straightened it.” I said as a passing comment.

He nodded and that’s when I realised he was acting weird too. He seemed a lot tense, poised and aware of his surroundings.

    “It’s different.”

    I frowned, “Yeah, okay.”

“So, you guys are best buds, huh? Who would have known? Such a small world isn’t it?”

    I nodded.
“The smallest.” Kyle sipped on his drink.

There was a brief moment of an awkward silence and I was staring at Kyle in annoyance now. I wanted him to leave already; he had already said his greetings. I was having a moment with James and I wanted to continue with that.

“Aren’t you gonna go to the living room? To dance or something?” I asked him, my eyes communicating with his in an obvious look that said leave now.

“No, I don’t want to dance. Besides, I don’t know anyone there, just you guys and you guys are here, so I’ll hang with you.” He smiled his toothy grin.

James didn’t mind and he was ignorant of the mixed messages I was having with Kyle.

“Ned’s there and I’m sure you can make friends. It’s a party, it’s a place to meet new people and mingle,” I said hiding my annoyed tone, but Kyle knew exactly that I was trying to get him to leave and he was becoming arrogant about it.

He smirked. “I’d rather stay here.”

I was about to retaliate but then a group of girls burst in the kitchen and when they saw the hunks I was standing next to, they instantly made their way over, oblivious that I was present.

“Hey!” One of them said, moving over to James. “You’re hot!” She giggled.

“No, he’s mine!” It was then that I saw the girl whom James had to deal with earlier. What was her name again? Something with Ella.

“Girls, girls!” James tried his best to prevent the impending cat fight between them. He looked over at us with apologising eyes.

I watched this spectacle with passive amusement but that was when I felt a hand gripping my arm and pulling away from the kitchen to the dark corner of the hallway. James didn’t realise Kyle and I had slipped away.

“James? Really?” Kyle cornered me, the dim light in the hallway enough for me to see his face.

“What about James?” I frowned. I was trying to escape him but he wasn’t in any verge of budging. I furiously met his eyes.

“Are you planning to sleep with him?” Kyle accused me.

He was pissing me off and he knew it.

“I don’t think that’s any of your business.” I bellowed angrily.

“Not my business?” Kyle sputtered in disbelief, exasperatedly running his hand through his unkempt hair.

I cursed whatever it was that was making me want to do the exact same thing he was doing. No, I wanted more than to just run my hands through his hair. I wanted to yank it till it hurt.

“It is my fúcking business, Keya! You made it my business when you asked me to do exactly what you’re planning to do with him.” He angrily slammed his hands next to me on the wall.

I flinched at the impact and though the drumming music was still vibrating the whole house, I still heard that impact.

“No, it’s not!” I was shouting too.”Seriously get your head of out of the gutter! I didn’t even ask him to do anything with me.” I glared at him.

He floundered for a moment before he spoke, his tone a lot calmer now.

“Good, cos he fúcking won’t. Not if I ask him not to.” He threatened.

“You wouldn’t dare!” My eyes bulged at his threat.

He smiled coldly and leaned towards me so-so close that I found my lungs losing function again.

“You wanna bet?” He said, his dilated eyes burning me down to the pit of my core. It did wonders having him so close like this, having him looking at me like that. He didn’t help my already boiling body, when he scorched his eyes down to my lips.

I was getting tired of feeling like this.
Feeling so aroused and at the same time, feeling a frustrated longing for him. I was forgetting that I was meant to be angry at him.

With this anger I pushed him away with all the force I could muster.

“I don’t know why you’re so against me losing my virginity. But, just know this Kyle. You’re not my brother, nor are you my father. This is my decision and if I want to lose my virginity tonight, I can and will. It’s my choice, not yours.” My finger was nudging his chest and it had an effect as he backed slowly away from me. His eyes glazing an anger that had me almost had me retreating back to where I was.

I gave him one glaring look before I strutted away from his presence towards the kitchen where James was still trying to stop the two girls from grazing each other.

I went over to the drink section and this time I opened the vodka bottle and took three shots. I could still feel Kyle’s seething anger at my back and I knew he was at the doorway.

With a new confidence I got from the help of my good friend Smirnoff, I courageously brushed off the two girls, my eyes targeting straight at James. He looked at me worriedly for a moment and he was about to say something. But whatever he was going to say was impeded by my advance. I simply grabbed him by the back of his neck and pulled him down to my awaiting lips.
