    #EPISODEONE

I burst into laughter when Anabel whistled into my ear again.

She always did that to my ear and it always tickled.

I was blessed to have Anabel in my life.

Because of her, I was able to register in a private secondary school.

I was the only child of my mother (my single mother) but she couldn’t afford to send me to a good private school, but Anabel’s rich father had financed my fees for five years now.

Moses, one of the troublesome boys in my class ran to us. “You guys didn’t know that our result is out?”.

    “Result???”. We exclaimed.

I doubted Moses because he was capable of playing pranks because of his annoying nature.

“Liar…”I whispered and made eyes at him.

Moses made eyes at me, “Mary Ann, you are fond of taking the first position in class! Anabel! Why is your friend always taking the first position and you are always taking the sixth position? When will you buckle up like your friend?”.He made eyes at Anabel and walked away.

I and my best friend ran to check the result board for ourselves and Moses was truly right.

I could see the solemn glint in my friend’s eyes.

Somehow, I wished I was the one that had taken the sixth position because Anabel valued her grades so much because of her father.

We sat beside each other and cried together in each other’s arms.

During break that same day, I and Anabel were eating at the dining hall when my crush walked in.

Anabel was the one that called my attention to his presence. She nudged me. “Your crush is here!!!”.

The most handsome boy in the world, the school head boy, Raymond Roland.

His father was the biggest sponsor of Greenfield college.

I waved to him but he ignored me and walked to get his food.

    He always ignored everyone.

    Perfect spoilt brat.

I turned to Anabel. “Are you sure that Raymond will ever look at me? I am poor and unkempt. You definitely suit Raymond more since you are rich and very beautiful”. I suggested in depression.

“Mary Ann,do you know how much I always wished to be you? You are so beautiful and intelligent”.

“You are more beautiful than I am, Anabel”.

    “No, you are, Mary Ann!”.

    “No, you are!!!”.

    “No, you are!!!”

    “No, you are!!!”.

“Will you guys just shut up!!!”. Raymond fired at us.

We turned and looked at the spoilt brat as he continued eating his food.

He was just so authoritative despite the fact that he was only a class ahead of us.

I glared at him. “You don’t impose your authoritative attitude on others”.

He scoffed. “Blockheads like the both of you? You don’t need ‘polite in your life”.

Anabel nudged me. ” Do you still like him?”.

I sighed sadly. “Yes. Even if Raymond is a spoilt brat, I still wish to marry him in future. If Raymond grows up, he will change”.

“Can we make a bet? If you marry Raymond, you will give me two hundred thousand and if you don’t marry Raymond, I will give you two hundred thousand naira”.

I burst into laughter. “Why are you so sure that I will marry Raymond?”.

“… because I believe in my friend”.

When I got home that day, my mother was drying the fufu outside the house for tomorrow’s sale.

    I hugged her from behind.

My mother always acted more like an elder sister because she was not too older than me so we usually shared everything with each other.

She knew about my big crush on Raymond Roland.

As usual, we were going to eat from the same bowl that evening.

    Jollof rice and fried fish.

We ate the food excitedly and I told her about how Anabel had scored sixth position and we had cried together that morning.

My mother looked softly at me. “We are going to meet your father this evening”.

I gasped at her. “My dad? I have a dad?”.

She chuckled. “Are you kidding me right now, Mary Ann?Who doesn’t have a dad?”.

I held her hands in mine excitedly. “So, when are we meeting him?”.

“This night. Pack your bags, I have already packed mine”.

I gasped at her. “So soon? You should have told me so that I would have bid Anabel goodbye”.

“Your father is close. Go pack your clothes while I check the fufu outside”.

I danced makosa in my room before I started packing my clothes into my Ghana must go bag. Mum couldn’t afford a decent travelling bag. I have used a Ghana must go bag all my life.

When I see daddy this night, I am going to tell him to buy me a suitcase, just like Anabel’s.

After I had packed my clothes into my bag, I pulled it to the sitting room and rushed out to announce my preparation to my mum who was still outside the house. It was already six minutes after eight. “Mum? Mum?” I was shocked to see the bag of fufu sprawled on the floor.

Did mother mistakenly pour the fufu on the floor?

I squatted to pick the powder on the floor and noticed blood at the edge of the sackbag.

Where was the blood coming from?

I traced the blood and noticed that it was coming from behind the back door.

I rushed to the back of my door.

My mother was lying lifelessly at the back of the door, drenched in blood.

    Someone had killed my mother.

I screamed because the sight of it was so painful to behold.

    My mother…

    I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Suddenly someone hit my head with a stick from behind.

    I ran out.

I felt so weak in heart but I had to run.

I ran as fast as my legs could carry me along the dark road.

I tried to tell people that a man was following me but no one paid attention because they couldn’t even see my face.

I ran across the road and stopped a car that was on high speed.

I breathlessly watched the man rush out of the car.

    He was deadly drunk.

    I stepped back.

    But it was too late.

He dragged me into the backseat of his car and forcefully penetrated into me.

That was the greatest pain that i had ever experienced in my life.

    An unbearing pain.

I couldn’t see his face clearly but he looked very familiar.

But he was wearing a dragon ring on his pinky.

And he was also a teenager.

    A minor driving drunk.

    Obviously from a rich home.

How could everything just happen to me in just one day?

The pain was too much in my heart.

The man kicked me out of his car and dumped me at the edge of the bridge.

I held hard to the block and screamed out for help.

If I let go of the block, I would fall into the river.

    Suddenly, I saw my friend.

    Anabel.

She looked so haggard like she had been looking for me everywhere.

The man drove off immediately he saw Anabel.

“That man raped me, Anabel! Come and get me out so that we can get him! Did you read the plate number of his car?”.

Anabel smiled and walked towards me.

I had never seen my friend smile that way before.

“Nobody raped you as far as I am concerned. I didn’t see any man”. She chuckled.

I was shocked at her response. “Bestie?”.

“Did you just call me bestie? I don’t mingle with people that want to take everything from me!!!”.

“I am in pains, Anabel! What the hell are you talking about!!!”.

“Sixth position is too low for me! And now, everyone even ask of you more than they ask of me because they think that you are better than me! I have money, but no one even cares about that!!!”.

I sobbed. “Anabel, my mother is dead and now, my private part hurt so much right now! I am in pains!”.

“My mother died too a long time ago and i never wallowed in self pity like you always do!!!my step brother raped me brutally ten years ago when I was only five years old!!!you are not suffering!!!no matter what you feel you have gone through, you are not suffering! You think you are a princess huh? Let’s see how you even marry Raymond Roland after you leave this world! You will never have anything in life as long as I am alive!!!”. She kicked me hard into the river below third mainland bridge.

As I fell towards the river, everything kept replaying in my head.

I had lost my mother the same day that i was raped.

And that same day, my best friend pushed me to the river.

I was not going to die.

    I will never give up.

I had a lot to do.

I had to find the person that killed my mother, the person that raped me and I was going to make life a living hell for Anabel Thompson!!!

I was going to find my father too.

I had so much to do on earth.

    Anabel Gretta Thompson,

    We shall meet again.

I opened my eyes and found myself on a bed, my body beneath the duvet.

Last I remembered was myself falling into the river.

What was I doing in such a grand room? How on earth had I gotten there?

I sat up and just immediately, a beautiful woman that was way older than my mother walked into the room with a steaming cup of tea in her hands.

She sat beside me on the bed and gave me that welcoming smile that my mother always gave me as she fed me the steaming tea.

    It was hot.

She embraced me. Her embrace reminded me of my mother.

It still felt so hard to believe that I would never see my mother again.

    So painful.

    The loss.

I stopped drinking the tea and looked at her for a second. “Can you tell me how i survived in that deep river?”

    Someone walked into the room.

A man that looked like he was the husband of the woman. “Has my wife told you how you got here? We actually stay here at the island but on days like yesterday, we do a memorial for our lost daughter right there in the yatcht. It was just immediately my wife started singing the favourite song of our daughter that you fell into the river. My men were fast enough to get you out and that ended the memorial”.

Tears filled the eyes of the woman as she looked up at me. “My daughter would have been just your age if she were to be still alive. Where are your parents?”.

“My mum is dead”. I couldn’t hide the pain in my voice as I said that word. “…and as for my father, he doesn’t even know me”.

The woman embraced me. “You have suffered so much, darling. I promise you, I will make sure you forget all your pains”.

“My private part hurts right now”. I winced.

    The couple exchanged glances.

“One man raped me and now, my private part hurts so much”. I explained further to them.

“I need to check you up” the man suggested.

“You? Are you the one that will check me up? Why don’t you take me to the doctor?”. I suggested since I was confused at his request.

“I am a medical doctor. A senior surgeon in Justified hospital”.

Justified hospital was an American hospital that had only one branch in Nigeria.

Very few Nigerian doctors were qualified to work there and the management pay their employed doctors extremely well.

If the man worked in Justified hospital, that meant that he was very rich.

He had a big ward right there in the house and he examined my private part and treated me in the ward.

In one week, I couldn’t feel pains right there again.

The woman never left my side.

She would make sure I eat, she would make sure she sing to me every bedtime.

In two months, I got very attached to the woman.

She reminded me so much of my mother.

One-day when she was helping me pull the swing from behind as I swung that evening, she said something to me, “Princess, will you like to officially become our child?”.

Did I have any other option?

The couple had comforted me and made me forget the pain of loosing a mother.
They were huge comfort to my soul, and most importantly, they were financially capable of taking care of me.

One morning when I and my new mum were watching a movie in the sitting room, she looked up at me. “Princess, we will be traveling abroad together so that you can finish your studies there. Though your dad will be coming around once in a while to check on us”.

I was able to study Veterinary science in the university of Harvard.

I was once tempted to study criminology at the initial stage, but everyone would be suspicious of me if I do that.

I was going to pretend as if I wanted to live a quiet life so that all eyes will not be on me and I will be able to commence my underground research about everyone that had contributed to my suffering in the past.

When we got back to my father’s mansion in Nigeria, I made my dressing room my research room where I had a projector and the photographs of Anabel and her family members.

I already bought the newspaper because of the news on it which had captivated me.

    It read…

‘The only daughter of the CEO of Santilles Electronics, Anabel Thompson has just gotten engaged to the heir to Justified hospital, Raymond Roland’.

It hurt more that Anabel eventually targeted my first love.

In the real sense of it, Anabel had also had a secret crush on Raymond all those while that I used to talk to her about my feelings for him. She had hidden her feelings for him, and now after many years later, she believed that they would get married?

One after the other, I will make her pay for everything.

I looked up at my mother who was folding my clothes into my wardrobe. “Did you say that Justified hospital was looking for a good Veterinarian that studied abroad?”.

“Yes princess. Are you interested? I thought you said that you wanted to open a clinic of your own and didn’t want to work under any one?”.

“I heard that Joe Graham had been in the veterinary field for thirty years and he is presently the head of the department of vets right there in Justified hospital? Why don’t i learn from him before establishing mine? “. I watched my mother get convinced by my words.MY MANIPULATIVE WORDS.

If I didn’t work in Justified hospital, there was no way that i would be able to get back at Anabel who believes she can have her way.

Anabel was a prosecutor and now, she wanted to marry the famous extremely rich medical doctor.

I will destroy her career and relationship.

“Can we welcome our new vet, the beautiful Mary Victor”. Joe Graham announced immediately I was introduced to the Vet department that morning by the management.

    They applauded me.

I and one other lady were the only blacks in the department. The rest were foreigners from Asia and Europe.

I lied to Joe Graham that I wanted to visit the convenience room and used that opportunity to walk around the big hospital.

Raymond’s office was upstairs. I used the company map to get to the place.

I waited at the stairs because I knew that he had gone for a board meeting right there in the big hall downstairs and he would definitely come back upstairs to his office.

Just as I had expected, he finally came upstairs after the meeting had ended.

To my greatest surprise, he was holding a puppy in his arms.

    He liked dogs?

Perfect way to butt into his life because my profession would definitely be his interest.

He was surprised to see me. Of course he didn’t recognize me but no one stands on the staircase like that, looking like a stray dog like I was that moment and that wouldn’t catch his attention. It had to because it was the only staircase leading to his office. “Who are you?”.

I sighed deeply. “I started working here at Justified today and I think I missed my way”.

    “What department?”.

    “Vet”.

“You will have to go downstairs again and look for room 360”.

I observed his puppy. “How many months is it?”.

    “A month plus”.

“I hope you don’t bring it here all the time because at this stage, it needs its mother’s warmth more than too much air conditioner because of the season”.

“I know how to treat my puppy”.

“…better than a vet?”. I carried the puppy from his arms. “There is a sickness dogs usually have in the month of January and it is contagious. Don’t expose it to too much cold so that he won’t contact it since the harmattan is still in the weather”.

He nodded thoughtfully and carried back his puppy. “What is your name?”.

    ” Doctor Mary Victor”.

“Are you probably the daughter of Richard Victor?”.

    I smiled and nodded.

He gasped. “Richard is my father’s closest pal. They have known each other before I was even born. I thought his daughter died?”.

I smiled wildly at him. “His daughter has been reborn”.

    We burst into laughter.

I watched him closely and noticed that he had changed. So, that spoilt brat attitude of his those days was just part of growing up?

“For some reason, you look very familiar”. He observed me closely.

How can someone that has never looked at me back then in secondary School recognize me right now? Impossible.

“I hear that a lot”. I responded and watched him burst into laughter. He knew what I was talking about even if I sounded quite annoying.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me.

    Stiletto heels sounds.

    Ko…kor…korrr…

“Sweetheart?”. The person said in the tiniest voice I have ever heard, and that voice was owned by only one person in this world. “Sweetheart, I was told that you were done with your meeting and I was calling your line but you weren’t responding”. The tiny voice said behind me.

Of course I recognized Anabel’s voice.

Raymond brought out his phone from his trouser pocket and looked into his phone screen. “I am so sorry. I was distracted”.

“Distracted? By what? Or by who?”. I could feel her heavy stare on me from behind.

I turned to her and watched the shock on her face. I waved and smiled softly at her. “Hi Anabel! We finally meet again”.
