    OLUCHUKWU episode 1
    Written by Tochukw Anozie

Oh my dear Oluchukwu. The world wasn’t fair to you in any way. The only fairness the world allowed you was letting you to be born into it, and from then henceforth, it continued dealing you hardship and suffering until the end. Even as I write this as an adult, the memories of you ordeal bring tears to my eyes. I wish it was different for you.

Back in the days, when we were growing, Oluchukwu was a little girl in the neighborhood. She served as a housemaid to a family that will forever reap the consequences of what they did to her. Olly as we fondly called her could be our age mate (between 13 and 15), but she looked so tiny and malnourished that one could think she was seven (7). A mere look at her body would tell the tales of the many maltreatment and abuses she had passed through. The healing scars and the freshly inflicted wounds would tell you how wicked the world had been to her. Yet her only crime was being unfortunate to be born into a family that couldn’t take care of her.

Seeing Olly for the first time, you would have difficulties in determining whether she was male or female. Her scalp had many wounds and scars that hairs had stopped growing on some portions. The clothes she wore were so distinguished; they were always worn-out, oversized, out of fashion and not suitable for any human being. Yet she wore them happily. Her body, especially those parts covered by clothes had different colors. Some are either whiter or darker than the other parts, caused by the frequent introduction of hot elements to them. Just a sight of Olly was enough to tell her story. But in all, whenever she was outside that hell called home, she was always lively and happy. How she managed to put smiles across her lips even with her hellish life baffled me.

Her hosts; a rich family with two children aged two and six at that time. Her master was the councillor of our ward back then and had some strong political connections which made the people in the neighborhood to avoid any issues with him. Even when Olly’s predicament became a thing of concern to the entire neighborhood, no one dared say or do anything to him. Her mistress, a fabric merchant who prided herself in her husband’s political connections. She was one of the societal ladies and had many things at her beck and call, including Olly. Their two children had the best care there was. They looked so fresh and clean, all thanks to Olly.

Olly was a primary school pupil but hardly left the house before 11 am. She’d always stay back and make sure that everything was done before leaving else her body would bear the brunt. Even the teachers at school stopped punishing her for late coming after they learned of her ordeal. The only thing Olly gained from coming to school was the company of me and my comrades who were the kings of the street. We were solely in charge of all the mischievous happenings around the neighborhood. Learning about Olly’s predicament, we decided to help her in the little way we could. We’d come to school with our bags stocked with stolen foods. Our aim was making sure Olly was well fed before going back to her hell. And truly, she’d grab at those food like someone who have not eaten in days. Olly became our project and we were determined to do anything within our powers to ease her pain. Sometimes when her hosts were not around, we’d sneak into their house and help Olly with her chores to avoid her receiving any beatings.

We became the only true friends Olly had. She always looked forward to meeting us after school and have a grab at what we had to offer. Then a time came that we didn’t see Olly for two days. It was very unusual for her to stay from us for that long. We became so worried, so worried that we decided to go and check what was wrong with our Olly. Previously we’d devised a method of checking and knowing when it was safe to communicate with her when she was at home. Since we had known that Olly did most of her house chores at the backyard, one of us would climb the fence with the help of others and peep, carrying a stone in his hand. If he sees Olly alone, he will throw the stone at her to get her attention. Then she would signal to him whether the coast was clear or not.

That day, I was the one that climbed the fence. Immediately I brought up my head in a peeping position, I saw the worst scene ever. The little baby of two years old had defecated while Olly was inside the house. Before she (Olly) could come and attend to her, she had put her leg in the excreta (faeces). That got Olly’s mistress annoyed and she forced Olly to eat the remnant of the excreta. As I raised my head, I saw Olly eating human excreta while the woman stood there waiting on her with a long cane. While she ate, silent painful tears rolled down her cheeks. Her eyes caught mine and she stopped a bit. The woman hit her hard with the cane. I jumped down immediately, I couldn’t watch anymore.

    What happened to Olly next?
    Find out!
