They were all seated in the living room now; David was back on the long couch, but this time with one of the men from NCDC, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control questioning him. Caroline was seated on the single- eater couch to the left of David, with Toluwani and Kehlani sitting on the arm of her couch on her left and right respectively. The other two men from the NCDC were seated on the two separate couches opposite Caroline. They were of similar physique, slim and of short stature, not big and intimidating like the man that was talking to David. The atmosphere in the room was tense.

They had come with two police men in case they uncounted any resistance, but the police men were outside in the bus they had all come in. Caroline was still angry, and it was odd to see her turn into a protective Lioness when the men had initially charged in. She had started barking words at them with confidence, and asking for the right they had to barge into her house to question her and her friends. But since David wasn’t ready to reveal to them what was really wrong with him, she had to finally back down and let them act on instructions given to them by the state Governor.

Oyo state was one of the few states in the country that wasn’t on total lockdown. People were still allowed to go about their daily activities. The governor took his time to think of the best way to handle the situation, and after the third week of the total lockdown in the major cities of the country, he decided to start mass testing of COVID 19 all over the state. The people of the NCDC also acted on tip-offs. If someone recently got back from Europe, Asia or the Americas in the last couple of weeks, their neighbors were asked to tell on them, if such people didn’t surrender themselves for 14 days isolation. Also, people of the state were encouraged to expose people that showed signs and symptoms of the virus in their neighborhood. That was the governor’s way of nipping the spread of the virus in the bud without totally stopping business activities in the state. People took this serious because of the fear of the virus, and one of Caroline’s neighbors most likely saw David fall earlier, and called the NCDC.

Her parents usually spent most of the weekdays at their farm house about an hour from the city. Sometimes her mom would come home to spend the night midweek to see how they were doing. Most times she would have her sister over, Caroline’s Aunt Dorothy. But today was Thursday, and Aunt Dorothy had gone off with her boyfriend, because she felt one night before their parents arrived won’t do that much harm. Plus, Caroline was 23 years old; old enough to oversee everything around the house, and take care of her little sister. Their other siblings were in boarding school.

One of the men was taking David’s blood now, and Toluwani grabbed Caroline’s hand. She didn’t know if the little girl was scared for her brother, or if the sight of needles gave her the chills. Caroline smiled, wondering how Toluwani would have reacted if her brother was subjected to the NAAT test for detecting corona virus, which involved sticking a thin, long swab down a person’s nostril. That would have freaked her out for sure, Caroline thought.

After taking the blood sample, the man stood up, and so did the other two. “So, we will get back to you within 24 hours.” The man said as he put the pouch containing the test kit under his arm, and started heading to the door. David sat there, rubbing the spot in his arm the needle had gone in with cotton wool.

“Okay sir. So, what happens before then?” Caroline asked as she got up to follow the man.

“I’m sorry, we are going to quarantine you all in the house till then.” One of the other men coming behind Caroline said.

    “What? Why?”

“This is the best way to contain the virus.”

“Don’t worry; it will be over very soon. It’s just a day.” The man in front of her said, cutting her off.

When Caroline and the three men had gone out of the sight, Toluwani ran to David’s side. “Does it hurt?” She asked with a puzzled look on her face.

“It hurt just for a second, but not anymore.” David said and got off the couch, still rubbing his hand as he walked down the corridor leading out of the house. There was a restroom just by the exit to the left. He walked in, threw the cotton wool into the toilet, flushed, and washed his hand.

When he walked back into the living room, Toluwani and her friend were nowhere in sight. He sat on couch and sighed, thinking of the discomfort he would cause Caroline and her sister. He pulled out his phone and saw a notification of 7 missed calls on the screen. They were all from his mom. He didn’t know how to tell her without freaking her out, so he decided to send her a simple message till he was ready to talk to her. In the text message, he simple wrote, ‘I’m cool mom. I’ll call you in about ten minutes.’ When he hit send and let the phone fall on his lap, Caroline walked in with a lost look on her face.

“I’m sorry how this whole thing turned out.” He said.

“It’s okay.” She said with a smile. The room got quiet for a while and then she broke the silence with, “so, what are we going to do for the next twenty-four hours?”

    ⚡Episode 5⚡

David finally called his mom and told her the whole story. She was dumbfounded for seconds, and he had to repeat ‘mom’ a couple of times before she finally responded. When she asked why he had fainted, he lied that he had drank a little too much alcohol the day before and was having a bad hangover. She got angry and cussed him out in Yoruba, but that was better than telling her the truth right now. She came by to the house minutes later, but the police told her she would not come out if she goes in. She agreed to their terms, but apparently the NCDC guys had locked the gate with a padlock from outside and gone with the key.

The walls of Caroline’s house were too high for his mom to see inside, and it felt like her kids were imprisoned. She started crying, and it took Caroline to talk to her on the phone for her to calm down. Caroline told her to imagine Toluwani was having a sleepover with Kehlani. After speaking to Toluwani on the phone for a couple of minutes, and the little girl also assuring her she was okay, she finally left outside the gate, but called back every now and then to speak to them.

David didn’t think the people from NCDC would go to the extreme of locking them in. It wasn’t like they were in the old Soviet Union. But he understood that it was what the governor had to do to make sure at least people were still able to walk around freely. The other states like Lagos that had had total lock-down for weeks had started experiencing an increase in crime rate. So, he saw this as a little price to pay for all that. He just wished he didn’t have to subject Caroline and her little sister to the torture of having their freedom taken away from them.

David and Caroline were seated opposite each other at the dining table now, having dinner; spaghetti and meat. Toluwani and Kehlani had had theirs earlier, and gone to bed. Before now, they had been binge watching Money Heist on Netflix. David thought the night would somehow turn into a romantic one, like it does in the movies. But so far, nothing magical had happened. There was chit-chat every now and then, but there hadn’t been any spark. She had been more talkative earlier, before they got the visit from the NCDC workers. It was clear there was something on her mind.

“Do you want to talk?” She said out of the blue. When David looked lost, she went on to add, “I mean, do you want to talk about the…the diabetes?”

Hearing her say it out loud made his heart start pounding in his chest. He had always felt like if he acted like it didn’t exist, it would just go away. But he guessed he had to stop living in denial, and face his reality. “I hope I didn’t offend you?”

“No. It’s okay.” He said and sighed. “I’ve always had dreams of how my life would turn out and things I would achieve in my life.”

“It breaks my heart every minute to think that I might not accomplish my own goals.”

“Come on! David. Having diabetes isn’t the end of the world.” She said with a warm smile.

“It sure feels like it.” He said and looked straight at her. Hearing her say his name made him feel a little better.

“You just need to eat right, take your pills and insulin shots, and you are good to go.”

“You make it sound so easy. You’re a medical doctor; you know it isn’t that easy.”

“It isn’t, but you have to draw inspiration from famous people that have diabetes and still go on to do great things.”

    “Like who and who?”

“Larry King.” She said, and looked into space for a few seconds before saying, “Halle Berry, and…Tom Hanks”

“Really?” David asked with shocked look on his face.

“Yes. And I’m sure there are many more; those are the ones I can remember.”

He bowed his head, deep in thought for a few seconds before saying, “How come you even know this?”

“It was research for a blog post I wrote a few weeks ago when this whole Pandemic started.”

    “Oh! So, you’re a blogger?”

“Yes. But not a ‘copy and paste’ blogger, you know what I mean.”

“Yes, I know what you mean.”He said with a smile.

“I’m not one of those people that started blogging after Linda Ikeji bought her Banana Island mansion.” She said and he laughed lightly.

The room was quiet for a while before she said, “I do agree with you on one thing though?”

“What’s that?” He asked, curious to know what was on her mind.

“Life sometimes doesn’t turn out the way we plan.”

“Oh. Okay.” He said and sat back in his seat, deflated.

“I had gone online to check the result for a course I took months ago.”

    “It wasn’t so good.”

“You might say, oh, it’s just one result, but it means a lot to me.”

    “I think I understand.”

“People always say I’m an enigma; A personification of beauty and brains. But lately, the more I try to keep that up, the unhappier I am in real life.”

“Some days I just wonder what I’m doing all these for. The pressure can be suffocating. Some days I don’t even know what I really want.” She sighed and smiled at him from across the table. “I guess it’s cool sometimes when you get to watch over people. I mean, like when you passed out outside my house, and I happen to be a doctor.”

“It felt great watching over you till you woke up.” She said and focused her eyes on him with a smile. The look lingered too long, and she broke the silence with, “Are you done with your food?”

“Oh, yeah.” He said and cleared his throat. There were still a few strands of Spaghetti left, but he was full.

“You want more?” She asked as she got up from where she was seated with her empty plate and walked over to his side.

    “No. I’m cool.”

“You don’t like my cooking?” She asked as she twisted her mouth into a scowl.

    “What? No, I….”

“I’m joking.” She said with a light laugh as she picked up his plate and headed to the chicken. “You want anything to drink?” She shouted out from the kitchen.

“We have Coke, Pepsi, orange juice, chocolate drink, yogurt, umm…and, okay, that’s it.”

    “Well…I won’t mind a bottle of yogurt.”

She dropped a glass cup and a mid size bottle of yogurt in front of him a few seconds later. In her hand was a plastic bottle of Pepsi, with a straw, slowly bobbin in it. She smelt so good standing next to him and he had to fight the strong urge he had to hold her. He didn’t know where that came from. She walked over to her seat, started sipping her drink as she smiled at him.

He smiled back at her before saying, “You know that used to be my favorite. Now I can’t even take it, unless of course in the case of what happened earlier.”

“Yep! Unless my sugar level actually drops lower than normal and I have to get it up quickly.” He said.

They sipped their drinks in silence, lost in their individual worlds. After a few minutes of awkward silence, Caroline said, “If you’re ready to sleep, I can take you to my brother’s room.”

“Okay.” He said and looked at his wristwatch before adding, “I’ll be ready in about five minutes.”

There was silence again for a few seconds before she said, “It’s funny I went into my brother’s room earlier to look for something, and ended up spending a few hours playing his playstation 4.”

“That’s interesting. What game did you play?” He asked as his eyes lit up with excitement.

    “Mortal Kombat.”

    “Are you for real?”

    “Yes. That’s my favorite game.”

“Wow! What a coincidence. That’s my favorite game too”

“You want to play a little before we go to bed.” She asked with a smile on her face.

“That won’t be a bad idea.”

    ⚡Episode 6⚡

They were in Caroline’s brother’s room now, playing Mortal Kombat on Playstation. The sky blue pyjamas that Caroline had gotten for David was laid out on the neatly made queen size bed. Bed sheet and walls were immaculate white and it got David wondering how Caroline’s brother maintained the place. The room had a little set up of a big couch facing the plasma TV by the wall, next to the door. There was a, deep brown, hardwood TV stand underneath the 60-inch TV where the Playstation console was placed on.

A punch, uppercuts, kicks, and special moves; the sound of the game characters fighting echoed through the room. They were seated on the rug, between the couch and the TV stand, looking up at the TV with PS controllers in their hands, and grins on their faces as they battled themselves on screen. Every now and then Caroline would nudge him with her shoulder if he was winning her in the game, and sometimes she would tickle him a bit so that she could get some moves in. It surprised David to see her so playful. At some point, there was power outage, and they both groaned in protest.

They had been using the generator all day, and power had been restored, so the gate-man had switched off the generator. When Ahmed switched over to the normal power about a minute later, they sat in silence as the Playstation 4 went through a booting process, projecting a bright sky blue light from the TV screen on their faces.

“Is it wrong that I don’t this quarantine to end?” Caroline said, breaking the silence.

“I mean, our quarantine, not the total lockdown in the country.”

“Well, let’s see…are you ready to handle a worried mother?” He said and she turned to look at him with a puzzled look on her face. “I’m talking of my mom being worried about Toluwani.”

“Oh my God! Do you know I totally forgot your sister was here?” She said and laughed lightly. After a prolonged silence, she said, “I don’t know, it feels like I’ve known you longer than just a day.”

“It feels that way with me too.” He said and the room went quiet again.

The Playstation completed its load, and they continued playing the video game.

After playing two hours of video game, Caroline yawned and paused the game. “I think it’s past my bedtime.” She said with a little laugh and dropped the controller on the TV stand.

“Your yawn is sexy.” David said with a smile.

“My yawn is sexy?” She said between laughs, got off the floor and sat on the couch. “I’m so tired.” She said and collapsed sideways on the couch. After a while, she sat up, but didn’t leave. He sat up on the couch too and his heart started beating. Is this an opportunity to make a move, he thought to himself. Even though he had had girlfriends while in school, they had most times been in his class. Seeing them every day and knowing everything about them made it easy to approach them. But with this girl, he felt she was out of his league, and he didn’t want to read the wrong signs.

He felt like the sound of his heartbeat would get louder than the sound of the air-conditioner any minute now. If only the space between them on the couch wasn’t too d--n much, it would be easy to reach out and touch her. But what if she wasn’t thinking what he was thinking. Heck, they just met a few hours ago, this was definitely too soon. He thought to himself.

“Oops! I almost dozed off.” She said and got off the couch. “I must be more tired than I had thought.” She said as she yawned and stretched. Even though the only light coming from the room was from the TV, he still got a glimpse of her flat belly. It was a sight pleasing to the eye. “If you need anything, my room is the second door to your left.” She said in a tired voice.

“Okay.” He replied as she walked out the room and gently closed the door behind her. He sat still for a few seconds, then got off the couch and stretched. He walked over to the restroom, turned on the lights and looked himself in the mirror for a while. Caroline had told him earlier that he was lucky to have fallen on his side when he slumped, if not his face would have been a bloody mess. She had wiped off dust off his face while he slept, but when he looked deeper into the mirror, he saw a little spec of dirt in his hair. He turned on the tap and splashed water on his face a couple of times, and then onto his hair a few times too. He grabbed the white towel from where it hung on the wall and walked out of the bathroom as he dried his face and hair.

David sat on the bed for a few seconds, but still felt too dirty to sleep, so he went back in the bathroom and turned the shower on. He got dressed, stepped in the bathtub, and got under the shower, shaking the first few seconds as cold water hit his naked body.

There was big white bar of soap the head of the tub. He bent to grab it and washed his body quickly, as water from the shower washed off the foam on his body. He was about to be done when he thought he heard a voice. He turned off the shower and grabbed the towel by the wall as he stepped out the bathtub.

“I was asking if you…” She was saying and her voice trailed off as he stepped out of the bathroom, bare chest, with the towel around his waist. David had had very little to do in the village he had been sent to for NYSC, so he spent most of his stay there building his muscles; little did he know that one day all that work on his body would pay off. He saw her staring at his chest in admiration for a few seconds too long before she caught herself and looked away. “Sorry, I wanted to ask if you…if you need me to bring up orange juice for you. I mean, just in case.”

“Umm! No, I feel great. I don’t think I would that again anytime soon.” He said, feeling uncomfortable himself.

‘Okay. See you tomorrow.” She said, turned around and walked out of the room quickly.

He watched her gently close the door and laughed lightly before heading back into the bathroom.

    ⚡Episode 7⚡

    © Kayode Odusanya✍️

David woke up to the noise of flies buzzing over his head. He kept his eyes closed for a few seconds to gather his thoughts and figure out why it felt like he was laying on a dirt road. He heard mumbling a few feet away from him, and when he opened his eyes, he saw the crescent moon up in the dark blue sky. He turned on his side to see two men in black jumpsuit. One was digging what seemed to be a grave, and the other had an AK-47 rifle hanging loosely on his shoulder, with the barrel pointing at the ground.

David coughed a few times and was surprised they didn’t look his way. He gently got on his feet, dusted dirt off his jeans and looked around the place. He could have sworn he had seen the structure of a building to his left when he was lying down earlier, but now it seemed like he was back in the north, with large expanse of Sahel Savannah vegetation; desert vegetation with no building in sight. He noticed he was barefoot, and when he looked down, he saw cockroaches crawling up his legs. He started jumping around till they were off his legs and he stumped them out. This caught the attention of the strange men.

“Hey Tony! He is awake, let’s get him,” The one with the gun staid and started getting his gun ready to shoot at David. The other one jumped out of the pit and picked up his gun from the ground. David ran in the opposite direction, heartbeat racing, praying a bullet doesn’t hit him any minute. He thought he saw a tent with lights in the near distant, but it disappeared a few seconds later. He guessed it was a mirage and he really was in the desert.

RAT-A-TAT-A-TAT-A-TATAT!!! The sound of rapid gunfire from assault rifles filled the air. David started running in a zigzag manner, praying to God as he did so. He picked up speed, and never once looked back to see his assailants. The whole place was dark, but the lights from the gunfire behind him kept his trail blazed. The gunfire reduced and he assumed one of them had run out of bullets. He hastened his pace even more, keeping to his zigzag manner. The gunfire stopped all together, and he ran a few more steps before stopping out of breath and looking back. He realized he had actually climbed up a hill without even knowing it.

He saw them looking up at him, with their guns by their side, and wondered why they were no longer chasing him. When he turned back around, he was face to face with a scarecrow looking man. David screamed out in shock.

He kept screaming till he gained consciousness, and realized he was dreaming all along.

When he stopped screaming, it took his heart beat a full minute to come back to normal. And he sat up in bed, wondering how long he had been screaming, and how loud his scream was. Just then, the room door swung open. The lights came on, and Caroline was standing there, in a deep blue oversize shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. “What happened? Are you okay?” She asked in a concerned voice as she approached him on the bed. It was clear she left her room in a hurry, because she didn’t have a skirt or shorts on.

“I…I had a dream; a bad dream.” David said and laughed lightly to mask his embarrassment. “Hope my scream wasn’t too loud?”

“Well, it woke me.” She said in a low voice and sat on the tip of the bed. “You’re sweating.” She said and looked around. There was a white face towel on the bedside stool; she picked it up and started dabbing at his face to clean off the sweat. “Are you sure you’re okay?” She asked, looking him straight in the eye.

“I’m okay. It’s just the nightmare. Sorry for waking you.” He said and felt a bit uncomfortable with her stare. It was a look of concern, but it freaked David out to be so close to her on the bed. He could feel her warm breath on his neck. He almost jumped when he looked up. Toluwani and Kehlani had entered the room and were standing in front of the bed. They were in identical blue pyjamas, holding hands and staring at them. They reminded him of the twins in the classic horror movie, The Shining. Caroline saw the shocked look on his face and turned around. “Hey girls!” She said and got off the bed.

Rubbing her eyes, Kehlani asked, “Is the bogeyman in the house?” That was the first time David would really hear her speak, and it got him even more freaked out. Toluwani just stood there half awake, not saying anything.

“There is no Bogeyman anywhere K; uncle David just had a bad dream.” She said and walked over to the two girls. She turned back to say ‘I’ll be back’ in an almost inaudible voice before leading the girls out of the room. David sat there, going through his dream. With every minute he was awake, he forgot some part of the dream, till it was just a blurry part of his memory. But he remembered one thing; he was being chased. He wondered why death was chasing him in the dream, and what it meant in real life.

He was still lost in thought when she walked back into the room, still just in her oversize shirt. When she made to sit the bed, he noticed she had shorts on; very short shorts. At first, she sat at the edge of the bed facing him, and then like she felt that would be an uncomfortable position, she sat on the bed with her back resting on the black leather headboard like him. Caroline had her bare legs stretched out in front of them; long, slender, smooth legs. “So, what was your dream about?” She asked, looking straight ahead and not making eye contact with him.

He was quiet for a few seconds before responding with, “I was being chased by some men with guns. They kept shooting at me.” He stopped to get her reaction, but she didn’t say anything, as if waiting on him to continue. “I managed to get away from them, but then I saw something or someone that made me scream.”

    “Something or someone?”

“Yea, I couldn’t tell if it was actually a person or just a scarecrow.”

“Oh well, dreams are like that sometimes. They are just a mumbo jumbo of meaningless nothing.”

“Meaningless? You feel there is no meaning to my dream…to the dream I just had?”

“Dreams really are thoughts with strong emotions that you didn’t have time to completely process while conscious, so while you sleep, your subconscious mind plays around with those thoughts.”

    “Hmm! You think so?”

“I’m a neurosurgeon, and am fascinated about the mind in general. So I do a lot of reading, even outside my scope of study.”

“Hmm. Your explanation does sound plausible. I guess my fear of what my test results would be translated to the dream.”

    “That makes sense.”

The room got quiet for some seconds before she broke the silence with, “So…what happens tomorrow?”

    “It depends.”

“It depends on what?” She said and turned to face him.

“It depends on the outcome of the test.”

“I really don’t think you have the virus.”

“Well, we will never know till tomorrow.”

“If the result comes back positive, the NCDC guys would probably whisk me away to a treatment center.”

“And probably continue to keep this place sealed while they run tests on the rest of us.”

“Wow. That’s true. I definitely won’t want that.” He said with a distant faraway look in his eyes.

    “Me neither.”

He was quiet for a few seconds before saying, “If it comes out negative, I would be free. And I can return my little sister to my worried mom.” He said with a smile.

“And…tomorrow is Sunday, right?” He asked and she nodded. “And I will wait at home till my dad comes to drop off my other sisters, and take me to my main home.”

“You’re leaving tomorrow?” She asked in a low voice.

An awkward silence took over the room. After a while, Caroline’s hand slowly found his hand on the bed, and she held it, without looking at him. Their hands entangled and David moved to close up the space between them on the bed. He took a deep breath, and gently cupped her chin with his right hand and turned her face towards him. Her head was bowed. Slowly, she looked up at him, and then he went in for a kiss. With eyes closed, they kissed gently. And then Caroline dominated the romance, kissing him passionately, and pushing him on the bed, so she was on top of him. With a gently move, he flipped her around, so he was on top. And then, she flipped him around. They did this a couple more times, till they fell off the bed.

“Ouch!” David exclaimed as his back hit the floor, with Caroline’s weight on top him. They both burst out laughing, and Caroline got off him to lie beside him, still laughing. They lay there, staring at the ceiling laughing, till their eyes watered. They would stop, and one of them would start laughing again, and the other would join.

When they finally got silent, she turned on her side, put her head over his face and kissed him passionately for a few seconds, and then pulled back gently while staring at him. There was a smile on her face as she got on her feet. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” She said and he nodded at her. She waved at him and walked backwards a few paces before turning around and walking out the room.

David lay there for a few seconds, going through all that had just happened. A smile appeared on his face as he got off the floor, and let his body free fall on bed in excitement.
