LIGHT A FIRE – Episode 1

We would stay up late and gaze into the sky, telling tales about the moon and the stars. Our most precious moment in those nights was to light up the night with sky lantern. It was a time to catch up on rumours making rounds in the neighbourhood and a time for boyfriends and girlfriends to share intimate moments with each other. Some nights, the sound of kisses coming from the small beach flanking a seasonal river by the edge of my street, would become so rhythmical that you would regret coming out at such nights without a girlfriend or boyfriend. After we had lit up the sky with the sky lanterns, we would do what we referred to as ‘light a fire’. It was a sustained period of passionate kissing by all those who had their boyfriends or girlfriends around. Those nights were electrical, magical and passionate. Amazingly, majority of the parents in our neighbourhood did not kick against our hangouts. There were days some parents would join us to light up the sky. Our neighbourhood was one in which everyone claimed to be rich and acted like it, even though most struggled to make ends meet. We drove cars we were going to spend half a lifetime paying for. People openly lied about what they had not and places they had not been to. It was the norm. Everyone did it and expected others to do it. People would buy used home appliances and then go to big electronic shops to bribe sales girls or boys to help them fabricate receipts to claim the appliances were bought brand new. It was sickening, but back then, it didn’t seem so. It was…a fad! Yes, a fad. With the false receipts, you would fix in any amount you wanted in it and y it in the faces of neighbours.

We were empty, but we never saw ourselves as such. So on the grounds of such vanity, we built our lives and set out to accomplish our dreams. I happened not to be the gregarious type. I had few friends and read much. Intellectual stuffs were my kick. I went out for the frequent night fun so not to be judged as boring and out of fashion. I didn’t really know how life was going to pan out for me, but just like everyone else, I expected it to turn out right. In one of those nights, my life journey began. It was the first night I lit a fire with a girl. Sadly, my re burned for years and just won’t burn out. I had sent my sky lantern into the sky and sat on the ground watching the lantern rise into the sky.

Thoughts were zipping through my mind as I worked my eyes like camera zoom lens, gazing from the myriad of sky lanterns in the sky to the moon and stars which hung in the clouds far above them. “These lanterns are like our lives; at the beginning they burn brightly, but how they will burn out and when are mysteries to us,” a girl said, standing next to me. Those were my very thoughts! How did she read them? I turned to see who she was. My jaw dropped and my eyes ravishingly popped out in admiration of the feminine beauty before. I could tell she was aware that I was stabbing into every curve, contour and edge of her body, yet she chose to let me have a fill of her, while she stared into the sky. Her smile was angelic. She seemed to have been carved into the bum short she was wearing. Her cropped top revealed a flat tummy that would have made even Gigi Hadid (http://gigi-hadid.org/) envious. The feel of her perfume was like the call of the river bed from afar. It left me dazed as it wafted past my nostrils. Being an avid reader of female fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar Elle Glamour and Vogue; I found myself wondering which of the perfumes I had read about she might be wearing. Was it La vie est belle by Lancôme? Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel? Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf? I settled it must be Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent.

Actually I had not smelt any of those perfumes or handled them; but such was the vanity we lived in back then. When she looked at me, I asked without intending to move my lips, “How did you do that?” She smiled. Her set of teeth were like light in the dark. “What are you talking about?” she asked. “What you said about the sky lanterns, they were my thoughts,” I replied. She ignored me with a smile on her face and sat next to me on the sand, her body brushing against mine. My eyes followed her till her butt kissed the ground. “I am telepathic. Most times I feel people’s thoughts and speak them out without meaning to,” she said finally. “That sounds like another way of saying you are a witch,” I said, trying not to sound sarcastic. I think it came out that way. She turned and looked at me. There was no anger in her eyes. “I am not a witch. I was born this way. I often know what people are thinking even when I am on the phone with them.” Willing to keep the conversation going, I asked, “Can you tell me the thoughts on my mind right now?” “This one is too easy. You are thinking about me, and truly you can’t think straight right now because of me.” I looked her in the eye and did a little of my own mind analysis. I felt I was not far behind her in telepathy. “Why do I get the feeling you are hunting this night? Where is your boyfriend? Wait…you don’t have one, do you?” I asked giggling. She looked down on the ground uncomfortably. “Is it that much glaring that I don’t have a boyfriend at the moment?” “What would you be doing here with a loner like me if you had a boyfriend?

The sound of the kisses, it keeps me wide awake almost every night, so when I come here, I like to give the ‘kissers’ a wide berth,” I explained to her. “Well you were right when you said I am hunting. Really I have been hunting for true love for a while,” she said. “So how would you describe your hunting?” I asked. “In this minute, I would say hopeful.” I nodded my head and volunteered my name, “I am Dennis Eke.” “Camilla Efe.” “Our surnames sound almost alike.” “Yeah and you smile just like my dad.” “I do?” “Yes, you do so much. It made me notice you in the street.” “I thought we were meeting each other for the first time tonight?” “No, it is only for you.” “Your dad must be your idol for you to notice a guy because he has a similar smile to his.” “You said it just right; he is my idol. A few years ago I was afraid I had a crush on my dad…” “And it turned out it was strong admiration for him.” “How did you know that Dennis?!” she shouted and hit me playfully on the head. “You are not the only one who can read minds here,” I teased. “Oh God! I feel naked before you. Is that how people feel when I do what you just did?” “I believe that is how they feel…well I was joking.

That did not come by reading your mind. I read it somewhere that girls need their fathers to arm them and boys need their mothers to arm them. When parents play these roles perfectly their children tend to dream of marrying their parents’ ‘types’.” “What happens when parents fail in these roles?” “The kids will look for affirmation in the streets. The girl will go about looking for a father to arm her in her boyfriends and the boy will do the same with his girlfriends.” “Did your parents play their roles as they should?” she asked with a knowing smile that she was overstepping her bounds. I obliged her and volunteered the answer she was looking for so I could bait her with it and ask the question I wanted to. “I wouldn’t say my parents played their roles well. If I were to rate them on a scale of one to ten, they would get one over ten.” “Are you kidding me?” “No, I am not pretty. They thought child upbringing was all about providing food, shelter, clothing and education. Whatever else we faced in life was our business.” “It is a pity your parents failed you in that aspect, handsome,” she said and put her hands around me. I almost shed a tear or two. It had been a long time since a girl showed that much interest in me. I didn’t know if to hug her back or not, so I asked a question. “Would I be invasive if I ask what made your last relationship fail?” “Hmmm…

Well you wouldn’t be. I guess I have gotten over the pains. He was my first love and I loved him like mad. He was the air I breathed. I was sixteen years when we met. He was perfect in my eyes and could do no wrong. He was a gentle man. I was a girl then and believed love could never hurt me…” “Love has never hurt a soul. It is people that hurt people,” I interjected. She looked at me like a deer hit with a flood light. I could tell a light-bulb had turned on in her head. “You know you are right! love has never hurt no one.” “Yeah, pretty love has never hurt a soul,” I emphasized. “I was afraid he would leave me if I did not give him sex. The fear of his leaving me made me grow thin in just weeks. So I decided to bring up the sex topic…” “How old was he?” I interjected again. “He was 24 and I was only sixteen.”

LIGHT A FIRE – Episode 2 “You were young,” I observed. “Yes I was, and my heart was pulsating with love. There were moments I could not breathe by merely thinking about the possibility of his leaving me; and if I did not see him for a few days, I would pack up my bag and run to his house.” “I suppose it was in one of those your unplanned frequent visits that he took your virginity from you,” I said. Camilla smiled as if my assumption had brought back for her a wave of pleasant memories. “It was in his apartment, but there is a story to how it happened. When I brought up the sex topic and told him I would want to give him my virginity, but at the right time, he was cool with it. He bought the idea and gave me his support. I didn’t like that. I had expected him to fight, argue and ask for it. He didn’t, and that made me feel he didn’t want me…” “And so you began to doubt his love and seduced him to take it from you…” “Stop reading my mind Dennis!” “I am not reading your mind, Camilla. Your story is run of the mill. We hear it every day…teenagers letting their insecurities make them do stupid stuffs. I made my own mistakes too.” “So why ask me to tell you the story when you already know how it ends?” “I am sorry ma’am, I won’t squeal a word again.” “Good. It was like you said. I felt unwanted because he did not cry and beg me for sex. All my friends at that time had tales about how their boyfriends were crying and badgering them for sex. You should have seen how that made them feel. They walked on water, they flew without wings. They felt wanted and precious. Sadly, my prince in shining armour wanted me to keep my virginity till I was eighteen years old…because I could not bring myself to tell him to take it from me after I had sermonized to him how precious it was for me to keep it till I was at least eighteen…” She paused. I had forgotten my promise to keep my lips sealed and so opened it to say something when her face folded into a frown. I recalled my promise and kept it sealed. She smiled again, making my heart go pitter patter. “For months, I hounded him with all forms of seduction. From sending nude pictures of me having bath, walking about half naked in his apartment, sitting indecently when we were alone and to using sexually provocative speeches. At some point, I began to think that perhaps he was not straight. One day, just when I had given up, he attacked me in his bathroom. It was not the romantic sex I had been dreaming. I was a rape; a vicious endless rape. According to him, he had taken an aphrodisiac his friends introduced him to. He kept riding me till I passed out. He only stopped because he thought I had died. For days I could not walk and bled for long. I had to tell my parents lies about where I was because I could not go home.” Her story was spine-chilling. I did not know when I took her in my arms and held her firmly as though my strong arms could banish the memory of her pains. “It was sad for you to have gone through that as a sixteen-year-old…” “I asked for it, and besides I wasn’t sixteen then. I was seventeen years and two months old when he raped me.” “I guess you left him after that.” “No, it was the opposite. I became obsessed with him. He saw it and turned me into his sex toy. Somehow, the prince I knew retreated and a beast emerged from him. Yet, I could not leave him. He made me to have sex with his friends while he watched. I knew when that happened that he did not feel the same way I felt about him. My pride was gone and I did not know how to move on. I was ready to do anything for him just to hear him tell me he loved me and would never leave me…” Tears appeared in her eyes. “Please, Camilla don’t cry. I beg of you,” I pleaded. “Am I crying?” she asked with a broken voice. “There is tears in your eyes.” “Oh! I am sorry about that. I did not mean to cry.” “It’s okay. Just try not to cry.” She nodded her head, drew much closer to me and dropped her head on my shoulder and continued. “I had to find the remnants of strength left within me to move on after a 45-year-old lady and three teenage girls got pregnant for him. The three years that abusive relationship lasted, I aborted three times for him. He was my first love, and he gave me the first cut, since I met him and left, I have not been the same. It is like Sheryl Crow sang, ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’. She held me again and began to sing with tears owing freely from her eyes… “I would have given you all of my heart But there’s someone who’s torn it apart And he’s taken just all that I have But if you want I’ll try to love again Baby, I’ll try to love again, but I know… The first cut is the deepest Baby I know The first cut is the deepest But when it comes to being’ lucky, he’s cursed When it comes to loving’ me, he’s worst… I still want you by my side Just to help me dry the tears that I’ve cried And I’m sure gonna give you a try If you want I’ll try to love again, (try) Baby, I’ll try to love again, but I know…” I knew the song and so mimed along with her. I could tell she was saying something to me. I wanted to say no, but my heart was crying and bleeding for love. How could I say no to that drop-dead beauty queen? I knew we hardly knew each other, but that feeling we all describe as love was hanging over the two of us. I shut down my reasoning and went with the flow of the moment. I still do not remember who made the first move, but I do remember the kiss. It was the best I had in a very long while. Long after all the sky lanterns had burnt out and others had gone home, I and Camilla remained on the beach kissing each other and whispering to each other’s ears, “I love you.” For long I had waited for the day I would find true love, I believed I found it that night and it felt powerful. I could not hold the thought of letting her off my eyes and she felt the same way. Till 2: 00 am in the morning, we remained entangled in each other’s hand. The only reason we went home was that it became too cold outside. “I wish I could share your bed with you,” Camilla said to me. I felt my heart palpitate several times in a split second. “I am not sure I can breathe without you by my side. My heart will not be able to handle your absence till morning,” she added. I had not done anything that stupid before. I had never brought a girl home to my parents’ house and much less one spending the night with me in my room. There is always a first time. I could not resist Camilla, so I said to her, “My parents will kill me if they find out I brought you into the house and you spent the night with me. However, you are worth the risk.” She kissed me yet again and said with an almost sonorous voice, “Thank you baby.” I led her to my parents’ house and let her in through the back door. There was no fear in her eyes. She acted as though we were alone in some hotel room. While I was dealing with the foolishness of what I had done, Camilla stripped off her bum short and cropped top and went into the bathroom naked. I died a thousand times out of anxiety. While she had her bath, I found myself whispering, “What if my dad walks into my room now and wants to know who is in the bath?” I sprang to my feet and shut the door of my room. When Camilla came out, she slipped into my bed without her clothes on and asked me to hold her. By now my throat was dry, my head was spinning and my legs could barely carry me. How do I deal with this God? My parents will kill me. I should not have let Camilla into my room, I thought as I joined her in my bed. STORY CONTINUES…

LIGHT A FIRE – Episode 3 The night was not the sort I had feared it would be. Camilla was only interested in my holding her while she slept off peacefully in my hands. I doubt I slept a wink. Each time there was some noise, I raised my head like a serpent, ready to protect itself from intruders. Before the rst light of dawn, I woke Camilla and told her it was time for her to leave. The smile on her face when she woke made me to almost regret telling her to leave. I handed her clothes to her and helped her out of bed. She was sleepy-eyed. I had to help her into her bum shot and cropped top as though she was a little girl being made ready for school. She was beautiful, pretty and pure to look upon. Though I was on the edge, yet I could not help noticing her sublime beauty. “When am I going to see you today,” Camilla asked. “I will be with you by noon. I did not sleep well last night,” I replied. “Why?!” she asked, looking stunned. “I had the best night of my life so far in your arms last night and you said you did not sleep well. What stopped you?” she added, nding it hard to understand why I did not sleep well in the night. I would have loved to tell her I was afraid my parents would find out. I figured it would make me look like a child, so I side-stepped the subject. “Perhaps, holding a girl as pretty as you in my arms all night got in the way of my sleep. Look how pretty you are even at this time of the day.” She looked away, blushing. I drew a bit closer and left a peck on her face. She melted into my hands and whispered, “I wish, I wasn’t going home this early, baby.” The words had hardly left her lips when I heard my dad’s voice barking with a bang on the door, “Dennis! Who is in there with you?! I thought I had told your sisters not to sleep in your room!! Open this door!!!” My heart sunk into my stomach. How would my dad believe nothing had happened between Camilla and I all night? Camilla looked a bit concerned. I motioned at her to go under the bed. I had not yet replied my dad a word. Knowing him, I expected he would go hysterical any moment. Being lithe, Camilla had no problems at all sliding herself under the bed. Pretending I had just woken up, I made for the door and confidently unlocked and yanked it open. My phone was in my hand playing a tune. “Which of your sisters spent the night in your room?!” he barked. Mustering all my courage, I looked at him as though he had lost it upstairs. “Have you checked their rooms dad? They spent the night in their rooms.” My dad would have none of that; he shoved me aside and went straight for my bathroom. He was like a sniff dug. When he picked something up, he would never give up until he was satisfied he was wrong about it. Having seen no one in the bathroom, he began to check if anyone was hiding behind the curtains. I knew the next place he would check was under the bed, so I glided to the bed, dug my hand under it and pulled out one of my boxes under it. I sensed a telepathy between Camilla and I, she knew exactly what I was doing. I could feel my dad’s eyes, stabbing into me from behind. He was shocked by the ease with which I pulled out the box from under my bed. He had actually been counting that whoever was in my room was hiding there. I looked at him and saw disappointment in his eyes. To drive home my point, I pulled out another box, pretending I was looking for something. “I am sure I heard a voice in your room. A feminine voice. I wasn’t hallucinating, no I wasn’t,” he said to me, the look of anger in his face slowly thawing away. “Dad, I have been here all alone since last night. Perhaps you heard the song I was playing, it is my habit to mimic the voice of whoever I am listening to…” “I know that already! What I heard wasn’t you mimicking anybody,” he cut me short. As if an idea had occurred to him, he ran to the windows of my room and checked if someone was hanging on the air conditioner pavement outside. Before Camilla went under the bed, I had thought about asking her to go through the window and hang onto the air conditioner pavement. Thank God I did not ask her to do that. With his head hung low for thinking he accused me unfairly, he made for the door. At the door, he paused and observed, “Did you buy a new perfume?” I knew what he was suggesting and so I smartly knocked the bottom off it, “Last night at the beach, my friends came with all sorts of perfumes and we tried them out.” He looked around my room one more time and let himself out. I knew him. He wasn’t gone yet. I was certain he would crouch somewhere and listen to know if I had somehow fooled him. I went down on my knees and whispered to Camilla, “Stay where you are, he is not yet gone.” She nodded her head and remained still under the bed. I picked some of my clothes and went into the bathroom to wash them. On a second thought I came back, pushed my boxes back under the bed, using them to block Camilla. About five minutes later, I heard footsteps outside my door walking away. I could have bet all my savings it was my dad. There was no longer any way I could let Camilla leave. My dad would be watching every door. I even feared he might ship everybody into my room for morning devotion and a subsequent homily on how to be godly children. I had to crouch back under the bed and told Camilla to be prepared to spend the whole morning under my bed. She didn’t seem worried. She smiled giving me the impression she was loving the adventure. She was unruffled in a manner which left me awed. From my room I could hear my dad shouting at my sisters, “…he is a full grown man! Don’t go to his room and aunt your bodies carelessly because he is your brother! Which of you spent the night in his room?!” “Daddy, as far as I am concerned, we all slept here. We were watching Twist of Fate on Zee World television till we slept off,” Andre, the eldest of my sisters said. “Oh my God!!” that was my dad. The moment I heard him shout, I knew Kimi, our youngest sister was at it again. She loved to drive my dad from her room whenever he came shouting at them in her room. At first we didn’t know why she was doing that until she explained it to us. Whenever my dad would come into her room, which was considered the favourite room by my other sisters, she would begin to mill about her room completely naked. “Tell your daughters that my house is not a fashion runway! They should learn to cover their nakedness in this house and not harass their brother with their fully blossomed bodies!” That was my dad to my mother. With my dad going on and on about my sisters flaunting their nakedness in the house, I felt his attention had been drawn away from me. So, I crouched on all fours once more and went under the bed to ask Camilla to come out. Camilla was about to stir when my mother sauntered into my room and queried, “What are you doing under the bed, Dennis?!” “Looking for my socks! They have conspired again to abandon each other!” I lied. “I saw some in my room. By the way, how did they find their way to my room?” “Frankly, mommy I don’t have a clue. Are you sure they are not dad’s?” I asked and slowly crept out from under the bed. I stood before my mother and made sure I left no look on my face to give her the impression I was hiding something under the bed. “No, they are yours. Don’t forget I bought them.” “Thanks, mom, let me go take them.” “Not so fast. Your dad told me he thinks someone was in your room last night. He spoke of a perfume he had not perceived in this house before and he is right. I can perceive it too now that I am here.” “I explained to him my friends brought some perfumes…” “He mentioned you said that! However, I want to warn you. Your dad is hardly wrong about these things; I had lived with him a long time before any of you came out into this world. I know him. “He is convinced someone was in your room last night. The reason I let you go down to that beach every night is simply that I trust you. However, if you are going to be bringing your friends, I don’t care what gender they are, into this house, then I will send you packing. Of course you are dead if I find out that the person who slept in your room last night was a girl,” she interjected. “Oh God! Why is everyone thinking that I brought in a friend into my room last night? Why is nobody talking about our morning prayer? It is 5:30 am already.” “Shut up Dennis! I know you, whenever you bring up our morning devotion, you are trying to hide something. Is there something you don’t want me to see under that bed?” she asked moving closer to my bed. I stood frozen on my spot with fear. STORY CONTINUES…

LIGHT A FIRE – Episode 4 My mom was about to go down and look under the bed, when my father dashed into the room with my mom’s phone, “Darling, your mother is on the phone! Your dad had another attack last night!” my father bellowed, giving my mother the phone. My mother sprang to her feet and took the phone from him. “Mama! How is papa?” she asked as she and my dad left my room. I took a sigh of relief and cleaned the beads of sweat on my face. That was a narrow escape. I waited a few minutes after my parents had left and locked my door. I went under the bed to tell Camilla how close my mom had come to finding out she was under the bed, and to my shock, Camilla was not under the bed. “Camilla! Camilla!” I called out. Then one of the old, big boxes under my bed opened a bit and her head popped out. “Jesus! How did you do it?” I asked in utter dismay. There was not enough space under the bed to open and crawl into the box. So how did she do it? “Should I come out now?” she asked still smiling. “How did you get into the box? I asked again. “I don’t know. I tried to squeeze myself into it and somehow managed to do it.” “I am sorry for all you have been through this morning. I beginning to wish you didn’t spend the night in my room.” “It’s okay Dennis, I don’t regret it. It is part of the story we will tell in the future.” “Are you comfortable in that box? I think you should come out.” “It feels cool in here. I think I should hide in it just in case your mom decides to come back.” “Okay, stay there. Let me carry on like no one spent the night in my room.” She blew me a kiss and popped her head back into the box. I crawled out from under the bed and went into the bathroom to wash some of my stuffs. Luckily for me my parents drove out that early morning to go check on my grandpa who had issues with his constantly failing health. My sisters did not come out of Kimi’s room until it was full dawn. In-between that time, I stole Camilla out of the house and promised to see her later in the day. I could not see Camilla at the time I told her I would. I had to report to work first and my uncle had so much for me to do that day. It was a family tradition for all the children in our family to work in my uncle’s company, earn some money and see themselves through university. I was being paid well, but ninety percent of my earnings went into my studies and catering for myself. I managed to escape from work and got back to the street about 4:30 pm. I did not bother going to school that day since I knew there was not much lectures to attend. Camilla had been missing me, I could tell from the 87 missed calls I got from her. That number does not include the over 20 calls from her which I picked. When I walked into their living room, Camilla’s mother, whom I only knew from a distance before then, whispered to me, “You are in trouble. Big trouble.” Really, my heart sunk into my stomach. “What happened?” I asked, eyes wide. “Camilla has been crying her eyes out since afternoon. I am not sure she has eaten today either.” “Why? What happened to her? Is she sick?” “You are Dennis, are you not?” “I am Dennis ma’am.” “You are her new boyfriend, right?” “Yes, I am.” “She told me you were coming around by 2:pm today. When she did not see you, she became hysterical. She spent hours in the kitchen cooking to welcome you. When you failed to show up, she…you have to understand my daughter is emotional, she has her own devils whom she contends with regularly and has been true much at her age…” “I don’t understand ma’am. I am not just a regular student. I work for my uncle and had so much to do today. That was why I could not keep the appointment. I spoke with her severally while I was at work. I can’t fathom how she could think I deliberately chose not see her as we planned…” “Dennis, I understand, but I am not your girlfriend. Go upstairs, her room is the second on the right. She is the one who needs to hear your explanation.” “Thanks ma’am,” I said and ascended the staircase hurriedly. I rapped on her door and called her name. In a ash her door swung open and she barged out. Her eyes were red and I could tell she had been crying for long. She was clad in an unusually short jean skirt and a white singlet. Just little of what lay behind her clothes were hidden from me. The smile which regularly enveloped her face was gone. “What are you doing here by this time?!” she yelled at me. “I am sorry baby. Like I told you over the phone, my uncle had so much for me to do at his office today…but…” “Leave my house! Get out now!” she yelled, as tears owed from her eyes. “What is all this babe? Is there something you are not telling me?” “How do I know you were telling me the truth? How do I know you were not smooching another girl while you told me you were working for your uncle?” “Oh my God. Girl you have issues…” “Yes I have issues Dennis and now you know! What are you going to do about it? Leave me like other men?! Are you going to run like they did?!” She was hurting very badly. Sadly, I could not understand why she would be hurting that bad. Nonetheless, I decided to let the knowledge of what I had read come to the fore. I took her in my arms and hugged her as firmly as I could and whispered, “I will have to be mad to leave a drop-dead beauty like you for another girl. If you are thinking I will walk away, you are dead wrong. I love you Camilla and I am not going anywhere soon.” At the sound of my words in her ears, her sobs shunted like a locomotive train. She exhaled what seemed like fumes from a volcanic eruption, melted in my hands and whispered, “I am sorry baby for overreacting. My past flashed back after we spoke over the phone and I felt like I was yet again in the same situation I was in a year and some months ago…” She covered her face with both hands in shame and continued, “Please forgive me. My mind played tricks on me. Believe me I thought the lies had begun again…” I put my index finger on her lips and shut her up. “I wasn’t lying to you, and I promise not to lie to you. I spent my day working at the office. I did not even go down to school like I said I would…” “Really? All the while I was here, I kept imagining you with some girl in school,” she interjected. “I did both my work and my uncle’s work today. He had to leave the office early for the hospital. My grandpa is not getting any better…” “Oh my God!! I have been selfish. How is your grandpa now?” she asked, leading me into her room. I plumped into a comfy sofa in her room and replied, “He is in coma now.” “Christ! Have you gone to see him today?” “No, I had to come see you first.” She knelt down before me and said with a broken voice, “Dennis, please forgive me. If I showed you anything today about myself, it was pure selfishness. You are sweet. You chose to come see me first instead of your ailing grandpa. I judged you too hard. Please I am very sorry. Forgive me, can you?” I pulled her to her feet and pecked her on the cheek. “Baby, there is nothing to forgive. We are ne… I am famished and very thirsty. Can I get water to drink?” She pulled me to herself and kissed me passionately. When we broke from the kiss, that warmth and smile was back to her face. “You deserve better than I have treated you today. You will get water, food and much more. I cooked for you,” she said and dashed out of her room. While I was alone in her room, I could not help thinking what would happen if I was to get busier with work and school. We had only begun to date for a day and a few hours and she was acting as though we had known each for a lifetime. I could not see her earlier in the day because of the work I had to do, and for that, she acted the way she did. The more I thought about it the more afraid I became. STORY CONTINUES…

LIGHT A FIRE Episode 5 Camilla entered her room with a tray of food and I drifted away from my thoughts. She was looking very provocative in her clothes. “Hello baby, here is the food I prepared for you,” she said setting the tray on a side stool. She was her usual self once again. That smile which made my heart palpitate often was on her face. There was no song playing nearby but she was dancing. I knew the song was in her heart. “Thank you so much baby. I didn’t know you would take the pain to cook for me,” I thanked her. “Open the plate baby,” she goaded me. Her eyes were bright with excitement. Whatever was in that plate could take my breath away, I guessed. Slowly I lifted the lid of the plate and my hand got suspended in the air. The aroma of the delicacy in that plate hit my nose and left me salivating as my taste buds came alive. “What is this, baby?” I asked, almost drooling on the food. “That is Beef Goulash and white rice,” she replied. I managed to drop the plate lid and picked the spoon and fork on the tray. I was too hungry to try to show any table manners. So, I dropped the fork and dug the spoon into the food. “Not so fast, baby. You have not thanked God for the food and neither have you taken water. You said you were thirsty, right?” I nodded a ‘yes’. The aroma of the food had left my vocal organs immobile. She stooped, poured out some water into the cup in my tray and slowly fed it to me. “Drink some water before eating, my love,” she said. I gulped the cup of water and turned my attention back to the food. I had always taken pride in my mother’s cooking, but Camilla was in another class. “Hmmm. This is good food. Where did you learn to make this?” I asked with the food in my mouth. You should have seen Camilla. She was literally glowing. “You like it?” she asked, hardly breathing well. “I love it!” She held her face with both hands. “Come here,” I said, tapping my left hand on my left thigh. Like a child, she hopped on my thigh and put her right hand around me. I tried feeding her, but she nodded a ‘no’ and said, “I want to eat from the one in your mouth.” I was more than happy to oblige her. I scooped a full spoon into my mouth, munched it a bit and turned my lips toward her. Like baby eagles, she kissed it all away from me. By the time I was done eating, I was sure Camilla was the one for me. “Where have you been all these years I searched for love like a street orphan?” I asked. “That is the same question I have been asking myself since last night,” she replied. “I don’t feel like going home.” “You aren’t going home Dennis. At least not yet. We have to go see your grandpa. If you were in his shoes, I bet he would have gone to see you.” Her words made me feel a bit guilty. She was right. If I was sick, my grandpa would have long visited me, praying by my bedside. “God! How did I forget? I have to go to the hospital now Camilla,” I said rising to me feet. “But I want to go with you baby…call your sisters and find out if they are still at the hospital. I would like to bring them some food.” I could not believe she said that. Her caring nature was already seizing my heart much more than her beauty had. I rang up Andre my sister, “Hello Andre, Are you all still at the hospital?” “Yes. Where have you been? Grandma has been asking after you,” replied Andre. “I am coming. Have you all had something to eat?” “Just junk. Why did you ask? Do you want to buy us food?” “I want to bring some food…” “Yeah! Kimi! Maria! Dennis is bringing some food!” Andre shouted in excitement. I heard my mother ask in the background, “Did you just say Dennis bringing food to us?” “He will buy it,” replied Maria. My sisters were my first girlfriends and I was their first boyfriend. We were so close that my father feared that there might be more to our closeness. His fear was baseless. We were just close and shared secrets. In fact, there was no secret between us…except that they did not know Camilla slept in my room the previous night. Scroll down

CONTINUATION “Baby, my sisters like the idea of my bringing food to them.” “I heard Andre’s voice. I will package the food on our way out,” she said peeling off her clothes as she went in search of what to wear in her wardrobe. The sight of her standing before me without clothes on left me breathing hard. She must have picked up my thoughts like she said she could. She swung around and asked, “You don’t like my being naked before you, right?” “It messes up my head. I will wait for you downstairs,” I said, standing to my feet. “I am sorry about that baby. I don’t know how to love. I give everything with all my heart at once. Please don’t leave my room,” she pleaded with me. “Okay, I won’t leave, but can you cover your body while you look for what to wear?” “Okay.” She took a piece of cloth on the bed and wrapped it around her body. It was a see through shawl. It did very little in keeping my eyes away from her naked body. I had to fish out my phone to read a story on BBC science. I struggled to concentrate while she dressed up. With all the strength in me, I tried to find interest in the article, Take the test: Do I care too much what people think of me?In-between my distracted reading, I stole peeks at her. She was happy, completely oblivious of my struggles. When she was done, she stood before me and asked, “How do I look? I don’t have the time to wear makeup.” “You look much better without any makeups on your face,” I observed. She smiled and looked away. I wasn’t flattering her. My observation was true. When she looked my way again, her face was red; she was blushing. “So I can follow you to the hospital the way I look?” “Yes, my love. You look great the way you are. Don’t do more. You just might break necks on the road, mine included.” Her eyes moistened and she ambled toward me. I stood up and took her in my arms. We held each for a few minutes. I heard her sniff a couple of times and so I pulled away from her embrace and looked at her face. She was crying. “Why are you crying, baby?” She wiped off her tears hurriedly and tried to leave the room. I pulled her back and pleaded, “Tell me love, why are you crying?” “My heart is racing fast. I don’t know how to love. I don’t know what I will do if this doesn’t work out between us.” “Stop crying. It is going to work out between us. We will give it our best shot. Can I get that smile again?” She smiled at me and then raised her palms for a hi-five. I responded like a basketball player and yelled, “Yeah! That’s the spirit! We will go down fighting to make sure this love works out between us.” “I love that!” she yelled in my face, making sure our lips brushed together. “Let’s go baby, I am ready now,” she said, leading me out of her room. She stopped and went back for the tray of food. Downstairs, she didn’t waste time to pack the food for my and mom. I had no clue how my mom would react when I introduce Camilla to her as my new girlfriend. I had never introduced any of my girlfriends in the past to her. She knew about them but did not see any one of them. I knew my sisters would praise my taste when they see Camilla. Already I had heard them talking about girls with great shapes and Camilla was in that category. While I pondered their different reactions, Camilla’s perfume wafted into my nose and a thought flashed through my mind, “Mom is going to recognize the perfume from my room!” My head swooned and my palms became sweaty. There was no way I could tell Camilla to stay back. I knew my mom; she would certainly recall that Camilla’s perfume was the very one she perceived in my room earlier that day. “You look spaced out. What are you thinking?” Camilla asked me as we headed out of their house. “You can read minds, how come you don’t know what I am thinking now?” I teased her. She studied my face for a moment and observed, “I see fear in your eyes. Are you afraid of what your sisters might say about me?” “No. They will fall in love with your shape the moment they see you.” She stopped and inhaled heavy gulps of breath. “You know how to use words. My head is spinning,” she said. “I am glad my words mean much to you,” I said, happy that she did not figure out my fear. Nonetheless the fear plagued my mind. I knew I would be in trouble if my mom were to figure out that Camilla was the one in my room last night. She would shut down the relationship and report me to my dad. God, what do I do?
