My lying husband

PART THREE

After Mr Adeshina left me to my fate, I began to do anything that could fetch me money just to survive. My salary was N13,000 monthly but sometimes, I hardly can spend N1,000 for myself because of family responsibilities. It will be unfair to spend the money on myself while my family suffer back at home. At least I have food to eat here, I have roof over my head, I can change clothes from the used ones given to me by aunty Seyi. I was sending my salary home to take care of my parent and siblings.

I met Gbenga in our campus a day to my birthday. A friend of mine, Blessing took me out to buy me a gown to wear for my birthday. All my clothes were used clothes inherited from aunty Seyi and none of them was good for an outing for a birthday celebrant. It was a local boutique but they have good patronage because their goods were cheap. As we were coming out from the boutique, I saw a young, nice looking guy staring at his rear mirror, looking at my direction. His car was cool. Only few girls will turn down greetings from a guy with such a nice car. Hello ladies, he greeted politely, waving his hand. My name is Olugbenga Adeniyi, he said and stretched his hand for a handshake. We both had handshake with him and he offered to drop us wherever we were going. We told him we were going to Unilag and he dropped us right in front of the university gate. We exchanged contacts and he left.

Gbenga was the first to call me on my birthday. He knew through Blessing that my birthday was coming up a day after the day we met. His voice was charming and he spoke as if we had known each other longer than we knew each other. Can I come and take you out for a dinner? A dinner? I asked like it was not going to be possible. I couldn't tell him I was a house girl and there was no excuse I could give to aunty Seyi for going out for a dinner with a man. Who will do the house chores? This is my primary assignment as far as aunty Seyi is concern. My long pause kept him wondering. "Prisca are you there?", he asked when he didn't hear me say anything for a long time. I forfeited a lecture in order to have a date with Gbenga. We went out for a lunch rather than a dinner. The car he came with on my birthday was different from the car I saw him with the first day I met him. None of the cars were small cars. From my assessment, he must be a rich guy. He has not asked me out but I have accepted in my mind. If he ask me out, I won't think twice before saying yes, I told myself.

Without much ado, Gbenga found his way into my heart. He replaced Mr Adeshina in my life. But as rich as I thought he was, I hardly get N1000 out of him. The way my mum trained us, we don't ask for favour even if we are dying. He kept taking advantage of me but hardly meet my needs. He was full of promises, great promises that can blow one's mind. I was carried away with his love and I was not mindful of his stinginess because I wanted to get rid of poverty in my life and family. His coming into my life is a step out of poverty, I assured myself.
