Episode 5

Day 5 of 35

He had not slept well the previous night, the pain was becoming unbearable but it could not be compared to the emotional pain that he was going through. The damage he had caused was too grave and he was scared that his child would never grow up with both parents.

He felt a plunge of pain when he thought of Ellen, the nurse had talked to him saying he should allow them bring her but his ego couldn't allow him. He didn't want her to see him like that no matter the circumstances.

The knock at the door had him lifting his head, he knew it could only be Officer Phiri. He came after a day for their sessions. Even though he wasn't for the idea of letting in anyone of what had landed him and his wife in this predicament, he had to do it for the sake of their little girl who was now at the mercy of a foster home.

'Good morning Mr. Musonda.' Yande said

'Good morning Officer Phiri.'

'Yande will do just fine, everyone calls me Yande.'

'Is that what she calls you?'

'Excuse me?'

'Ellie I mean, is that what she calls you? Does she call you Yande too? Does your name roll out on her tongue?' He asked looking straight at him a hint of jealousy in his voice

Yande didn't drop his gaze, he had to let Mwewa know that he was in charge.

'I didn't mean to.' Mwewa said apologetically dropping his gaze

Yande didn't say a word but instead removed his recorder and placed it nicely on the table before taking his seat.

'We can begin.'

'Where do we start from?'

'The last day of the tournament, you got home pretty late. Where were you?'

Mwewa smiled sadly before Yande switched on the recorder.

I had never cheated on my wife, not once. And I didn't think about it, this thing with Abigail I believed would fade away in no time. I believed as soon as the tournament was over then we would both go our separate ways.

It was a Friday, actually the last day.

I left home even before having my breakfast, I dont know what got into me but I just wanted to get there. On my way an idea hit me, I passed through Centro Mall in Kabulonga and got her breakfast from the deli. Trust me when I say I didn't know why I was doing all this. I had no bad intentions but I also blocked whatever thoughts of my wife.

I got her a cheesy Croissant and Cappuccino, I was only hoping it would still be hot by the time I got to the golf club. Lucky for me there was no congestion and I was there in less than 10 minutes.

'Good morning.' I said to Junza, Abigail's friend.

'Good morning.' She responded

I didn't know whether I was supposed to ask where Abby was or maybe just call her but lucky for me she showed up even before I could ask.

'Mr. Musonda.' She said shock registered on her face

'Good morning to you too Abby.' I said with a smile

She smiled back.

I gave her the food.

'Got you breakfast.'

'Thank you so much.' She said

I could see that she was shocked but I liked that she didn't turn me down.

'Alright later.' I said and walked away even before she could say a word

The rest of the day was boring, the President of the Golf Club passed through and we talked about a few things; business wise and also on the sport - golf.

Being the last day we were closing early and I decided to use this opportunity to take Abby out. So I left the team closing and I offered to give her a lift, she met me in the car park with her friend. I was okay with the both of them coming with me but her friend said she had to check on her kids.

So after dropping her off at Longacres I decided to drive to The Manor in Rhodespark.

It was around 6PM when we got there and I ordered us some food which we really enjoyed.

Mwewa paused and looked at Yande who switched off the recorder.

'Did your wife know where you were at that time?'

'Ellen was always busy.'

'You haven't answered my question.'

'No she didn't.' He responded

'Please go on.' he said switching the recorder back on

***

Just like the previous night talking to Abby felt right, she was the most talkative girl I met. She was so free and open with me, she didn't hold back. She told me different stories that I didn't even know how time had flung.

We were only leaving Rhodespark after 9PM, I drove her to Chalala and asked if I could see her again which of course she agreed to.

'Mr. Musonda you are a married man, what do you want with me?' She asked when I had parked in front of her house

I knew she would ask something like this but I didn't know she would be so casual about it, one of the things I was starting to like about her. She was open and free with and around me.

'I don't know I told her honestly.'

'Do you want to have sex with me?'

She caught me by surprise there.

'Mr. Musonda you are a married man and so I know your wife is obviously friend enough for you, you can't tell me you just want mere friendship with me. It's better you are honest from the start so that I see whether I still want to be here.'

To be honest I didn't know what I wanted with her, but I was sure I wanted to keep her around and see where all this led us.

'Can we be friends? We don't even have to be close.' I told her

She smiled.

'Yes I can be your friend, but when this place becomes uncomfortable for me I am leaving.'

I watched as she got off the car, I promised to visit her the following day since she wasn't working neither was I.

***

Yande switched off his recorder and looked at Mwewa searchingly

'You want to ask something?' Mwewa asked when Yande wasn't saying anything

'I am not here to judge you, I am here to get the story from the horse's mouth.' He responded packing up

'I am not a bad person.'

'I never said you are and it is not in my place to.'

'Tell Ellie I miss her.'

'Am sure she knows that already.' Yande said walking out
