Day 9 of 35

episode 9

Yande angrily walked into his partner's office, he couldn't go on with this.

'My cover is blown.' He said angrily banging the door behind him also ignoring the lady that was seated on the chair

'Hello to you too, good afternoon.' His partner Owen said

He paced about in the office without a word, this is not how he planned for it to go.

'Ellie knows who I am.'

Owen laughed placing his legs on the table.

'What is funny?'

'Who did you think you were dealing with Yande? Ellie is a professional criminal who hurt her husband in a professional manner. You thought she wouldn't keep tabs on his side chick?'

He shot him an evil eye.

'Sorry.'

Yande walked to the dispenser and poured himself some water, he needed to cool off.

'Do you think her husband knows the kind of woman he married?'

Yande chuckled

'He has no idea the kind of person he has turned her into.'

Angrily sitting down, he got his phone and dialed Abby's number.

'What are you doing calling me?' She asked with fear remembering how she left

'I needed to talk to you.' He said calming down

'Yande I am fine now get off the phone before this line is tapped.'

'I love you.' He said his heart in pain

'I love you.' She responded before dropping the line

Owen looked at him without a word, he had been against this from the beginning. The judge had no idea the true identity of the investigator he had assigned to deal with the Musonda case because Yande's documents were forged.

'Go home and sort yourself out Yande, tomorrow go back and finish what you started.' Owen said dismissively

The following day he woke up earlier than usual, went for a run before coming to take a bath and then headed to the hospital to see Mwewa.

'Good morning Yande.' Mwewa greeted

He was feeling a lot better today and was sure he could go through the stitching

'Good morning Mwewa.'

Yande placed his recorder on the table and turned to look at Mwewa.

'Let us try something different today, I dont want to hear about what happened between you and Abby. How about you tell me how your relationship got affected with your wife.'

Mwewa looked at him a little shock on his face

'Why the change of direction in the case?' He asked

Yande scratched his head, he needed to be sure he could trust Mwewa if he had to go on with this.

'I need you to tell me what really happened with your wife if you want me to help you.'

'What makes you think I need your help?' Mwewa asked

Yande stood up and shoved his hands deep in his pockets before walking over to the window, he had his back against the wall just next to the window and was looking directly at Mwewa.

'Have you ever thought of the kind of life your daughter will have when you turn out dead and your wife gets life imprisonment?'

'I am getting out of here alive.' Mwewa responded trying to hide the uncertainty in his voice

'You think so?' Yande asked moving close

'I know so.' This time he responded with confidence

'You see I have been instructed to get whatever information out of you and your wife for the good of this case and I won't hesitate to finish you off if I see you are a danger to society.'

Mwewa swallowed hard.

'I see we are on the same page.' Yande said touching Mwewa's face lightly making the other man scared

'Ellie doesn't have to come out, what she did to you is unforgivable and she can't raise a child like that.' He said

'Or maybe your daughter could just turn out dead today and no one will care, after all how many children die and get justice?' he added

'Don't you dare hurt my child.' Mwewa threatened

The throbbing pain made him put his head back on the pillow making Yande to smile

'I will make sure you get the best treatment, only if you do something for me.'

Mwewa knew he was fighting a lost battle, all his accounts had been wiped clean by Ellie before all this, he knew he wasn't going to win this. And worse off he could get the best treatment out of the country but the gravity of his case made him succumb to what he was being offered here. Ellie had it all planned out and even though it shattered him he had to give in to Yande.

'What do you want?'

Yande smiled, moved closer and whispered some things in Mwewa's ears.

'Okay.' Mwewa said almost inaudible

Yande packed up and walked out, his job here was done and he felt a certain joy knowing he was one step ahead of Ellie.

Mwewa allowed a tear to drop as the door closed, how could he allow his ego to be this bruised? Not only had he destroyed his family but he had also blown up all the chances of them ever being together again.

He closed his eyes remembering how his relationship with his wife got ruined.

Flashy lights are blinding, make sure to close your eyes. These words I had heard but not once putting them into account, I got home that day and I found the tiniest excuse to fight with my wife.

I had found her sitting there on the couch looking at the TV, I knew her; she wasn't even watching anything because her mind was obviously wondering what was happening to us. I could feel the fear in the way she looked at me, fear of losing me. Fear of being one of those couples that stuck around for the kids. She was scared of not wanting to try to anymore, of giving in to less. I could also see that she was trying to be strong but like glass I could see through her. I knew she was scared.

So after picking a fight with her over why Ellen was sleeping on her laps and not in the bedroom I walked away and went to take a bath, when she joined me in bed that night I expected a tantrum but she didn't throw one, instead she just slept there in silence.

That was probably the beginning of everything, I should have talked to her but I left everything hanging in the air. She didn't try to make it work, she was allowing me to be the man but I wasn't ready to wear those pants.

I woke up the next morning and prepared for church, I drove us as a family and even though Ellen tried to make conversation it was just different. We were so close yet so far away, the space between us was growing by the minute and sadly I wasn't doing anything to make it better.

***
As Mwewa sat in the hospital bed he wondered if at all things would have been different had he put in a little more effort into their marriage, if they would have been different had he stayed away from Abby.

But it was too late now to think of all that, he was going to get the best treatment ever just so his daughter grew up with him but at the expense of being at Yande's mercy.
